It can be done. You need to make or buy a winch frame that bolts directly to the chassis, the fairlead also bolts to the frame. Cut out the bullbar vents to fit around the fairlead.

If the cable slot on the bull bar is on the bottom of the winch mount you need to do the same as I did.
On the GU steel bar, you need to turn the winch upside down to have the cable roll out the correct way. That means (on Warn winches) creating a second water drain slot on the gearbox cover--no biggie but recommended by Warn US.
Fitting was simple--biggest job was the electrics and isolation switch.
GU IV 2006; 3.0 DDi ST-S; Nissan Snorkel, Bull Bar and Tow Bar; Warn 8,000# Winch with Dyneema rope; Auber EGT, Boost and dual Battery gauges; Provent 200; Dual Batteries; Three Dogs recovery points; Rear Springs +20% load; Outback drawers and Cargo Barrier; UHF; [GPS, Radio, CD, Bluetooth, SD, USB] floor extension; Alloy roof rack

I picked up a second hand Steel Winch bar fitted for $700 for OL, you can often find some good value ones on eBay, I think modding the Alloy would be a lot of work, given you will have to make sure you bolt the winch to the frame due to the strength of the bar.
