How to blend in with the Aussies: Step 1 - Get Yourself a Patrol.

Hey everybody! Just moved from the U.S. to Alice Springs a few months ago and figured if I really wanted to experience life as an Australian resident, I needed to get my hands on a 4x4. Having never owned an off-road vehicle, I didn't know what I was looking for but an '89 GQ (4.2L petrol) practically landed in my lap. Now I find that there is quite a loyal following for these vehicles which makes me even more pleased to be a Patrol owner. Hopefully, I learn a bit about off-roading before I go off and get myself stuck somewhere!

Glad to have found this forum!

Good on ya mate and welcome. You're well on your way to becoming an Aussie.

Rule number 1 is to always make sure you keep a well stocked esky of stubbies close by

Grizzly - I'm still learning how to speak Aussie! I know I keep the beer cool in the esky but what the heck are "stubbies"?

Hahaha! Of course. Thanks, Clunk71. And thanks for not making fun of me for not knowing that. Now I can appear more knowledgeable with my mates!

We may need to write/find a Aussie slang translation guide for you.

Stubbie = 375ml beer in glass bottle
Tinnie = 375ml beer in aluminium can (Tinny can also be an aluminium boat)
Tallie/longneck/Darwin stubbie = 750ml beer in glass bottle
What we call our beer glass sizes varies from state to state.
