Your custom 4WD and your big boy toys

    hey guys,

Just thought I would ask the question, we know you love your Patrols, you wouldn't be here right if you didn't, however do you use your custom patrol to tow or move your other toys.

    What are they?
Dirt bikes, racing cars, jet skies, kayakes, go carts, oh the list goes on.....

would love to see some pics of your 4WD and your toys (big boy style) so post some pics here and lets see what you all love to do

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

Your custom 4WD and your big boy toys.

    Hi all,
Here is my current 1990 GQ, not much custom stuff done yet, just finished converting from auto to 5 speed manual, only 2" lift, 33" muds, straight LPG custom set-up done by myself, twin LPG tanks-180lts useable, big doof doof stereo, 10,000lb winch. Soon to get rear quater chop, 2" bodylift, 40mm coil spacers and custom rear tube bar.

My other toy is my 1976 TE Cortina, have owned it for 17 years, bought it for $200, it was a 4cyl 4 speed, the old 4cyl lasted all off 2 weeks before I got sick of having no power, so in went a 4.1lt crossflow 6cyl, and C4 auto. Big difference, was great. But after a while that wasnt enough power either. So had a 4.1lt cast iron head crossflow worked, cost me $3000 way back then, spare motor was sent to a mob in Caufield, C.O.M.E racing engines, but what a bunch of fu#kwits, when I got my motor back, all excited thinking that this motor would go like mad, boy was I wrong, it was just a big slug.

I took it to a mate off mine who had helped me out a few times and was a mechanic, he did everything he could to get this thing to put out some sort of power, but it just wouldnt, tried 3 different carbies, different manifolds, fuel pumps, ignithion set-ups, but nothing, went worse than the 4cyl. Took car down to C.O.M.E and they put it on their dyno, this pos motor was only putting out 99 horsepower at the wheels, they said that I must have stuffed something up when installing motor, and said that because it wasnt fittd by a qualified mechanic that I had voided my warrenty. WHAT A BUNCH OF ARS#HOLES.

So wet back to the mate and we stripped engine down, first we found that where it was ment to have a set of forged flat top pistons, it had a set of dished top pistons with about 2mm clearence from top of piston to top of the block, straight away the mate said that this set-up was the problem, it would be great if I turboed it but not n/a. We pulled cam out and it was almost a stocker. We checked a few other things and most was ok. The head had been done exactly as it was ment to be. So we set about rebuilding the bottom end, this time went 40 thou up and used forged flat top pistons, did a couple off other improvements, bigger cam, bit more port work, port matched the 4 barrel Cain intake manifold, put a 500cfm holley 4 barrel carby on.

We put it in the Cortina, I had to drive it like granny for a few weeks, but after that OH MY GOD. thi thing was INSANE. Started drag racing it at Bainsdale drags(1/8th mile), was running mid 9 second passes consistantly, running on AV GAS. We played around with carbies a bit, ended up useing a 650 holley, just had to change the jets a bit, then ran flat 9 second passes. Ran this set-up for a couple of years then over reved it and took the top of no:6 piston.

Pull 6cyl out, it now runs a worked 351 clevo, built by the mate and I, we built his motor back in 1999, it was in an XB Falcon look a like GT. XB rusted out so I put 351 into my Cortina, had a lot of troles with getting good AV GAS up Western Victoria, so conveted it to straight LPG, when we built the 351 we built it for straight LPG anyway. Would only run high 9s- low 10s on AV GAS, once I converted to straight LPG it now runs 8.4 consistantly. Good thing with LPG is it easier to tune and a lot more power. Currently not racing due to blowing yet another auto, hopefully fix this problem soon. Well sorry for ranting on so long, but these are my toys.

Now that is a big toy in the man cave, there was a BBQ in the corner too

Went to a warbirds day at Ardmore in NZ, there was a Catalina there that flys, it had the wheel kit fitted for land based landing.
The pontoons on the wings fold up to make the end of the wing. They are only lowered for water landings.
During the war they flew from Australia to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in single missions, long & slow flights in a aluminium tube with no human comforts.
Lake Boga was a maintenance base as the lake was big enough to land / take off in any wind direction.
Also it was far enough away from the coast that the base could not be attacked by carrier based aircraft of the day.
A plane with an interesting history.
