If the freight wouldn't kill me 3D, I could rip up a set of cupboards for you here easily enough for you...

That Lincoln folder is insane!

@3D, the Lansky system is a bit fiddly but does get the blades very sharp. Worth the effort as fiddly as it is.

@ GKO thanks for the offer, I like to recycle if I can and have some timber here that might suit my needs.
Also which do you prefer top or bottom pic for you edge of the blade I like no shoulders,
and that Lanksey system seem so only touch up OE grind
Hes my cupboard 5 pine floor boards glued together x 2 with a "Z" nailed or screwed to each one,
like a farm gate. then glue and nail some 100x 20 pine for sides and top. 10" "TEE" hinges
and a walnut stain and a semi gloss finish as that's whats laying around.
If not pine some old sanded fence palings would look good too, will look sorta like this

Cupboard looks good 3D. Looks exactly like ones we used to have when I was a kid.

As for edges, I prefer the top picture... it gives you a sharper edge but the trade off is that it is weaker due to being thinner. All my heavy duty 'choppers' have the bottom edge.

Not sure if OD told you but I also got the Buck with the silver blade. Beauty of a knife it is too.

My Basket Hilt sword came in today... now I just have to work out how to mount it behind my Clan crest.

(Same as this one) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRASS-BASKET-HILT-SCOTTISH-BROAD-SWORD-/400738960111?pt=AU_KnivesSwords&hash=item5d4de742ef

Heres a sword hanger, I'm hoping to get some Perspex laser cut to display some knifes.

Yeah simple design,,, two like that with 100x20 pine for sides ,top and bottom bobs your uncle, yeah right lol
I have my kitchen/camp knives like the top pic my folders are a cross between the two, but will end up like the top eventually

Pic of silver Buck please
Funny how the scabbard for that sword looks exactely like my Samurai sword scabbard[saya]

Havent got a pic but it is a basic crappy nylon sheath with a plastic insert.

Some more eagle eye throwing knives got delivered today, gives me a full set of 4. Now to make an armguard sheath to hold them.

Ordered a heap of metal belt clips today as well for sheathes, it will push the cost up the sheaths up a few bux but it gives people another option.

Really need to do my cabinet now, thinking of screwing two branches in a "V" shape
and attaching them to the rear wall then drilling in dowels to support the knives

You'll be making a bucket load of kindling not so much fire wood haha

Are you allowed to go into a forest over there and cut a trailer load of fallen timber. Over here you need a permit I think but the closest is Tallarook and that wood is shite to burn not heat whats so ever
Tallarook has Grey box, a mate of mine has some property right on the edge of tallarook and i went down there and cut up some dead dry trees and maaate they burn hot and leave a ton of coals.

Restricted areas you can but also with a permit and generally only from fallen trees
During autumn and spring we have collection areas that allow you to take 2 ton a day of mountain ash that the dse/depi drop for you to cut up

and suitable priced
Will put some better pics later
@ Alitis I've been going to Tallarook since early 70's and never had a good fire yet ,your mate is lucky IMO
we camp on Red Hill Track

Some pics of the Damascus skinner ,
sheath is made from 4 pieces of leather but that may just be logistics.
Will display well with others I have, and it is the exact one that they advertised

Maybe the wood you pick up is wet or green, this was from a dead tree we pushed over with his tractor and cut up then let it sit for a couple of weeks under the alfresco at my dads. Gets my wood heater that hot it starts banging and creaking for the rate it makes it expand, a nice knotted piece will burn hot all night!!

I might have said it was a tad bigger, its actually 18" overall with a 13" blade. This isn't like the one your getting, the cold steel kuhkri machete is to be used, abused and neglected unlike the one in your link or the cold steel kuhkri gurkha which is 3 or 4 times more expensive lol.

Next on my list tho is the Gerber BG Perang machete :D

Nice weight to them both and on the skinner I like the fact there is a heel at the back of the blade edge
not many knife makers include this safety feature. There is also provision for a second edge too.
Skinner is 8" long.
both knives let down by cheap crappy sheaths

Late edit:: Just remembered I have an oval piece of Mahogany from an 1850

Unfortunately I dont but used hold a security endorsement for .44 magnum revolver and a Sigsauer pistol.

What style are you looking at using it for?
Most revolvers except loading are single handed same as pistols for loading of mag and cocking unless you keep the slide and hammer locked on reload.

Currently working on a Glock holster at the moment.

I would prefer a semi auto, I just have to come up with a safe way to rack the slide that the club will be happy with. I was thinking some thing like the slide racker and fix something to the bench to rack it on.

http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/slide-parts/slide-hardware/slide-rackers/slide-racker-for-glock-reg--prod42165.aspx

If I can't get approval from the club for a semi auto, I would look at a revolver.

Looks good mate. Was looking at getting a good all round knife myself to keep in the patrol. Do you have any suggestions?

oncedisturbed
10th September 2014, 03:47 PM
So many out there to choose from. Need to work out exactly what you want from a knife and what tasks you want it to do.

This will help narrow down the choices.
Needs to be a full tang knife as it is the strongest and 1 that is sturdy and able to do multiple tasks.

I have an anaconda branded knife in the patrol that will do most things, havent tried chopping with it yet but will cut, slice, hammer, break glass if needed, can be strapped to a pole (ie spear) etc and I have modded the pouch as well that now carries 10-15 ft of paracord, sharpening stone, folding knife, led torch, flint stick and striker with small compass bezel as well.

Depending on what Im doing or going, I also pack my Gerber LMF II which does everything including chopping and is a lot stronger knife than the Anaconda 1.

TD has put some info earlier on in the thread on how to choose the perfect knife and there are heaps of reviews and info online, hardest part is choosing 1 that suits your needa.

@ Lucas here are two knives I always take, I consider them to be excellent
general purpose knives for around camp and will do all jobs required.
Like OD I tend to take more knives than I need, just to test etc etc.
OD made the the side draw sheath for me, I also have a Buck 110 folder,
but prefer the Schrade Bearpaw 5" number.
Going fishing on the 4 th of Oct so will be taking a box of new knives to test.
So around camp Ive found these two the most useful ,in cleaning fish, cutting rope
and making camp utensil, I have an awesome fillet knife I made.

As OD says what do you want your knives to do, chances are we'll have one to show you
Full tang all the way for fixed blade
that Buck has a 6" blade FYI

Late edit,,, I don't leave them in the Patrol unless I'm going fishing or hunting.
I do have several leatherman style tools on board though

@OD, did you knife from Wish arrive? I ordered the same one but it hasn't turned up...

At Doggy, the Toothpick is a great knife with a really nice balance for a long blade.

@ Family 4x4, you can get modified set ups on handguns, for complete one-handed operation... It just depends on what you can and can't use physically.

Bit the bullet and bought 1 of these that both Gecko and I have been looking at.

Initial thoughts were that it was very much a gimmick but it was just delivered and came as a bit of a surprise.

Knife itself is fairly sturdy and needs a decent sharpen and is a straight no frills knife. The sawback is actually very practical in its style and would suit its purpose well and not just for show.

The compass bezel in the pommel end cap is fairly accurate and the handle has a very small survival type kit which I will tweak a bit.

The led torch also doubles as a jet lighter which is a bonus.

The skeletal skinning knife and tool is impressive as it was reasonably sharp and includes a gut hook, bottle / can opener and small hex type spanner.

The jelly rubber for the slingshot was better than I thought it would be it's housing also has a signal mirror on the back and houses the ammo pouch.

The sheath is very sturdy holding the slingshot arms and has a cermic sharpening stone the back.

This is 1 for me to field test to see how it really perform.

Anyone?

oncedisturbed
25th September 2014, 02:10 PM
Tbh I am not 100% sure. Yes the tip is stronger but not reeaally suitable for any fine work like close skinning etc.

A lot of them are more for show, personally I prefer more of a strong drop / clip point blade myself as they are more versatile.

Wouldn't mind a toothpick myself but its more trying to gett wifey to let me have 1 as I keep getting in the crap for buying more knives lol.

Ok I have just started looking for a couple of knives for hunting and field butchering, and am totally confused by types/brands/materials! So I was hoping to get a couple of suggestions from you experts on some good quality knives for:

There are so many styles of both knives and sharpening systems out there that it comes down to personal choice.

2 field shapreners I highly recommend are the Gerber Field Myth and the Smith's Combo. Both are small enough for the pocket and come with tungsten carbide, ceramic and diamond sharpeners for both straight and serrated blades.

Gerber
49825

Smith's
49826

Knives need to be sturdy, full tang and no frills types knives. A Good general purpose knife that will skin etc is the Gerber Field (forget the rest of the name) like this pic.

49827

Doesn't have a gut hook but if you're careful, it won't matter.

Earlier on in the thread, there were some pics of a Gerber combo that also includes a skinner with gut hook and another general purpose knife which has been used on rabbits and goats from memory, which worked well.

Other option is to get a dedicated field kit that includes a bone saw and some will have a spreader as well.

TD and Gecko will have some more options for you but simple is usually best. Owning roughly 50-55 knives at the moment, I keep heading back to the same couple of knives that suit me most.

You'll love it very very sturdy and heavy for its size. would be perfect if it had a molle sheath
Heres another job I put on the back burner pardon the pun lol.
I had some large brass stock here for another product I was trying to make,
anyway I ended up posting the brass bar over to "The Ferret" to turn into cannon barrels and wheels.
One cannon I'm thinking of doing in red gum like on a tall Spaniard Tall ship. the other like a civil war number
I'll spry some ball bearing matt black for a cannon ball pile

Whats your take on this Bowie?

I wonder if that bowie comes with a CoA for that price and to show its genuine.
That shop looks sweet with their prices and range.

I remember turning those canon barrels when I was at school, still habe a barrel my grand dad made, just need the trolleys made up.

How do you find that elk ridge axe?

Got a busy weekend ahead with a wedding and a 40th to go to. Will get stuck back into the vanguard sheath over the next few days.

Hoping it will turn out ok as I am adding a belt clip so it sits lower and adding a securing strap coming off the clip housing.

Also had 4 plough disc's behind the chimney on the pot belly ,
now its been replaced with a Coonara.
I have recently made a 6ft tri-pod and as Im down sizing when I go away
thinking of using the disc as a frypan /wok, I'll need to grind the coating off the inside
first and then polish with a flap disc.
Jeff jump in anytime lol Ill even bring one up for you.
they are 450mm across so more than enough for a frypan/wok.

Figured it out going to turn it into a 450mm frypan with a long handle.[700mm]
just a few shovelfuls of coals and away you go

oncedisturbed

Interesting, if it is true damascus steel then it is a bargain also with that sheath.

Very basic handle scales but you could swap them out and make up a nicer set.

No piece of damascus steel is the same and is usually very pricey, even for a premade knife blank that you can finish off.

Seller has a 100% feedback rating so it appears genuine.

@ Family that link doesn't say how many layers of Damascus, be wary
nah cannons don't fire, only shelf warmers

Anyone know what they coat plough discs' with ? Pitch???
Might make the frypan up then go to Tallarook for the night and throw it in the fire and burn any coating off.

Here's my frypan from hell,450mm wide, its only to slide on and off some coals so should work a treat.
after I burn the coating off it I'll "salt' the cooking surface and hopefully "blue it" at the same time
I'll also put some timber on the handle so its easier to handle.
I'll get it sand blasted this week that should work a treat.

tempted by this even if its made in china, nice size for sticking

Can do up an X7 sheath once I finish Clunk's if you want?

All my stitching is done by hand, type of stitching will depend on item and it's level of use. That will determine whether I use a locking saddle stitch, rolling stitch etc.

Looking at the quantity that the he has for sale, they would be mass produced and prestamped then coloured from there more so seeing as has 9 of the for sale.

That sling alone if hand carved / stamped, the detail and colouring would be around the $150-200 mark easy.

That rifle round pouch again if truly hand crafted would easily $90.00 upwards.

Pricing up the scabbard at the moment as he wants it felt lined is going to be somewhere around the $225+ mark, never knew that felt was so friggen pricey

Yeah agree 100% that the post is slower.

Now for everyone else that reads this and wants some leather gear made the will look awesome
and be practical I highly recommend Southern Leather Solutions, I'm hoping he will become a vendor here,[hint]
Jasons' work is very high quality indeed, plus he does custom stuff as well. If it can be made in leather Jasons your guy.
Heres a hatchett cover for my Fiskar X7, perfect fit and a great colour too, and a wishing tree fob for my Patrol keys.
