]Not the prettiest knife going around but its one of two cast blades I have.
Sure does hold an edge and carves up a roast in no time

Very nice work on the blade. Have been keeping my eye on those strops. Looking at block mounting my 1st once

Cool TD, 10th was originally 21 Water Transport in Darwin, your dad may remember the unit.

Picked up 2 more knives on special, not a Bear Grylls fan at all but damn Gerber make some good blades.

Picked up the Ultimate kit and a Tactical Small Samurai with 5 fold blade.

Dad passed in 2002 sadly I miss the him big time even tear up writing this.

I have been searching through Knives all day and found a great design.
As I have brass plate I'm going to make a Buck 110 folder but as a fixed blade,
instead of Pakka wood inserts I'll use bone and scrimshaw it, I'll cut the knife out tomorrow.
Will end up an 81/2 inch knife, Querky I think
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271228848788?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648

Edit::: it will look like picture but fixed, cant wait to start it.

edit again::: I like that hammered look but needs to be on the right knife, yours is good

oncedisturbed
26th January 2014, 04:15 PM
That would look sweet when finished, that damascus version is a different spin on it and would look tops when finished.

I wasnt sure on the small samurai in the package but the photo doesnt do it any justice being a bit dark but once I took it out was heaps better.

Sorry about your dad TD, wasnt aware. Should have the timber rattler and mountain man this week.

Checked the bucks in Anaconda yesterday and they wanted $150 for the standard 110, fell over backwards

threedogs
26th January 2014, 04:28 PM
No harm done mate he was a great father/man.

That 110 is my sons be he doesn't use it so it stays with me..
Buck also do a file knife as a memory of when they first started I suppose.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220389212679?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648

Edit ::: open to ideas on how to do bolsters and inlay should I one do it so it looks like a folder flush on the top and open underneath
OR just finish it flush on both sides

$150 is just thieving, just wrong when ppl get greedy.
I can get it from Buck cheaper than that

oncedisturbed
26th January 2014, 05:24 PM
Yup cheaper direct from Buck, try making some mock scales and bolsters from cardboard etc as an overlay and see how it looks and then try different versions maybe even a hidden tang with a fore finger groove below the top bolster / hilt.

Trying to make an order on Budk but the iglobal part is having a fit, the sales code gives a 2 for 1 so 6 knives for the price of 3, if it comes back online will place the order and the prob sell off 3 of them

threedogs
26th January 2014, 06:03 PM
good luck with iGlobal,
I think I'll make it so anyone I show will want to close it LOL
I've got some red spacer material here so that will highlight between brass bolster and bone inlay
There is even a timber rattler 110 buck,

oncedisturbed
26th January 2014, 08:35 PM
Muah 110 rattler drooooools

When I finish off some designs, will snag your email off you and send you some designs if interested

threedogs
27th January 2014, 10:31 AM
ok started my 110 fixed, I sprayed the Damascus flat black and straced the 110 shape on it
Need a little tweaking to finalise the shape , but happy so far

oncedisturbed
27th January 2014, 01:10 PM
Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Did you use a plasma cutter to cut the blank?

threedogs
27th January 2014, 01:18 PM
No I cut the basic shape with a 5" grinder and finished the shape on my Linisher.
Not worried about the heat marks as I need to harden and temper it later on.
I'll bet money now all I show it to will try and close it LOL.
As My PM says need to locate pins for the timber side inserts

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-16-dia-brass-rivets-3-8-Long-QTY-100-Round-Head-/230921558510?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item35c3ff59ee

Rapt found some they will make it look original OHH AHH Glen McGrath
Good shop for pins, lanyard holes even brass spacing material
Just didn't have enough material for a small hump across the back section

Heres a good example of what to use those pins for, I only need 8 that leaves 92 left lol

threedogs
28th January 2014, 01:45 PM

the TR was cheap cause it was damaged and United cutlery are out of business

@ OD can you explain a molle please

oncedisturbed
28th January 2014, 05:22 PM
Wtf? When did united go under?

MOLLE is a modular nylon / gortex / rubber mounting attachment system that allows a user to configure their webbing, patrol pack etc in a way that is easy accessible to items / pouches via straps or clips like the old Alice clip system.

threedogs
28th January 2014, 05:33 PM
that's what was written about my TR bowie they are United aren't they
My TR bowie is dis continued stock. Shrade went under too, about 10 years ago
another Buck copy for $15, this one has a bit of weight to it this time, these I'll use at camp
I'll store the Buck away

Very noice knives. I will see what I can find on UC.

The Gerber LMF II came in today, awesome bit of kit and sturdy knife with weight behind it

oncedisturbed
28th January 2014, 07:17 PM
Just checked, UC are still operating and not gone under. They partnered with the USMC in 2013 and the producers of the hobbit for rights to make their products.

threedogs
29th January 2014, 11:25 AM
Ok cut the brass for bolsters, note to self "brass get damn hot really quick".
It will looks heaps better polished and the Damascus etched out some more.
This is going to look awesome, if my image of it finished is right ,for the
inlay I'm now going bone then a 4mm slice of copper then more bone, mosaic pin
in each piece of bone
@ OD need apic

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 12:27 PM
That is looking good TD, do you mean a pic of the new Gerber?

threedogs
29th January 2014, 12:41 PM
Yeah any pic is good,
check out the size difference between the Gil Hibben and the timber rattler.
nearly makes it look like a pen knife LOL

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 12:47 PM
Holy moly, das is huge butter knife. My TR was put in the post today and should get my other Bowie this week touchwood.

Will take some pics of the new Gerber beside my Bear Grylls version and post up

threedogs
29th January 2014, 12:58 PM
Good thing butter never came in tubs back then , you'd end up spreading someone's fingers.
next big knife I think will be Nachez bowie, or Arkansas toothpick.
Know how to display them now, biggest down to the smaller ones I have

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 01:13 PM
I want to do the same with bayonets when I have enough, going to mount them in a fan pattern like a rising sun emblem.

Here are some promised pics. You can see the size difference and similarities of the blade, the orange version being a non military style size.

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 01:17 PM
And another

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 01:42 PM
Both are very comfortable to hold but I think the orange version is slightly more comfortable than the black version. The black 1 is by far the better knife overall though as it had a bit of extra weight behind it and will chop small branches better if need arises.

threedogs
29th January 2014, 01:43 PM
I have that many now its hard to have a favourite,
Friday I'll stock up on buff and camel scales.
Will also be getting some fillet knife blanks,

threedogs
29th January 2014, 02:31 PM
waiting on a few myself. started to put an edge on the
fixed 110 I'll take a lot of time doing this before I temper it.
Plus some pics of my others, all for sale if anyone wanting
wants one except the brass and bone sharp finger skinner
None would let you down in the field.
Once again brass get extremely hot when you grind it lol
again this is only some of them, there is this much again and then some

oncedisturbed
29th January 2014, 02:35 PM
Anychance you could pm me the prices at all, I may be interested in 1 or 2

threedogs
29th January 2014, 02:50 PM
4 of them are actually buck[branded].seems I like the brand, but I originally only brought the knife for the shape.
as you can see very alike sort of. But as I said I'm a fixed blade guy ever since I first played cowboys and Indians
I like those knives you get cause out n the field you can belt them with rocks/hammers etc to cut something
Should do a photo like Chopper Read with his arms crossed using the two Bowie

I will be putting my bayonet on ebay very soon

Now you'll need to make a sheath for it

Have all the brass cut ,now need to shape it a bit better before putting it on , as it will generate too much heat.
I have small brass rod that will be perfect ,middle pin is a bit of a worry

I have two blacksmith vice one is 57kg and 6" jaws the other is a 4" peter wright,
but I don't use that one. Don't know what trade they were used I think sheet metal not sure,

My 110 25th anniversary Buck, and a buck tactical folder. Lately trying to find sheaths for them all, discarding the nylon ones

Its not illegal to buy knives from OS if you are over 18, which I'm sure you are.

Is the Pyro for some design work like a pattern of some description

oncedisturbed
3rd February 2014, 05:01 PM
Yup, same kit you can use for wood burning patterns, basically an elaborate soldering iron.

Had 4 knives seized last year because Customs can't tell the difference between a paracord wrapped survival knife and a throwing knife.

Never been asked to explain a purchase before either

threedogs
3rd February 2014, 05:17 PM
That sucks being a survival knife I take it you can un do the cord and use it in and emergency situation.
Not a fan of those throwing knives., but a big fan of the throwing axe ,those double ended jobs
As I'm starting to go diving again, Its time to look for a decent diving knife.
Get decent abalone down this way plus some calamari and my favourite red mullet[goat fish]

Being a test run sheath I am using a type of cotton thread at the moment with a clear nylon thread as a base thread, all the seams are triple stitched and glued before stitching to hold the seams in place.

I'm pretty sure that neutral dubbin doesn't discolour the leather but I dear say that it may pay to try it on a test patch 1st. There is a product back in NZ called Snowseal that I have used before that doesn't change leather colour. It is a clear wax based product. Excellent waterproofing too.

threedogs
5th February 2014, 02:32 PM
thick enough for dog breast plates etc, You may not need a heavier duty machine just change the throat plate, feed dogs and needle.
Tension wise most females will wind it up as tight as it will go but you should be able to drag cotton through the needle with little effort.
as for the bobbin the bobbin weight should be enough so if you hold the tag end it will fall free under its own weight. When you look at a normal home machine lock stitch the bit you see is the bobbin thread , use two different colours and you'll see what I mean.
4-5mm is nice and thick, my roo pelts are fashion quality

I remember seeing one when I was a wee tacka, 40-odd years ago... I doubt it was a copy as I was visiting a friend on a miltary barracks back in Christchurch. It belonged to his dad. Ever since then and having the contact with the ninjas, I have always wanted one...

I think that there is a ban on double-edged blades coming in to the country unles you are a registered collector but haven't gotten off my but to find out. It was one of the reasons that I wanted to join the AKG, as well as making blades as a lot of the blades I want to make will be double edged.... Nice knife eh HL just be careful putting it back in the sheath.
noticed on mine the point has cut a few different ways it goes in
cause its as sharp as all get out.
I have a huge slab of RED Gum about 4' x 3' think I'll mount my knives on that
there is a slightly smaller version available as well

any thoughts on this tanto

May have to steal your idea if you don't mind 3D... I love the idea of mounting it and I reckon the red gum would be incredible.

I love the tanto... my favorite style blade. I already have a Cold Steel Tanto and it would have to be my favorite knife.

IMHO you can't go past a Cold Steel knife as I've never seen them put out a crap one.

This tanto on another shop says its double edged, IYO would it pass customs

Gecko17
20th February 2014, 06:35 PM
@ 3D... I wouldn't see the tanto as a double-edged weapon. Although the top edge tapers up to the back edge, I don't believe that it is sharpened so would love to see how Customs could justify it. If the top edge had been sharpened it may be a different story but I would have thought that the edge would have had to have gone on for a percentage of the blade.

Having said that, I would also say that it depends on the day, the customs officer and their mood.

Blade length is 350mm to hilt and 500mm OA. (13 13/16th inches? and 17 11/16th inches OA) Forgive the imperial measurements. Used to the metric system.

That katana you listed 3D as a pig sticker is a Chinese copy of the Cold Steel Magnum Tanto, right down to the Kraton handle and sheath! Will see how it compares.... I just ordered one. :D
