Looking at how they work I'm a bit fuzzy on how it'll sharpen a curved knife.
Cause it swings like a pendulum

oncedisturbed
30th December 2013, 05:21 PM
You move the sharpening rod back and forth with the grain of the blade only sharpening with the forward strokes.

The side movement is to allow for various lengthed blades and curved blades

Lanskis made a similar version ages ago but with a price tag to match, very good sharpener but couldn't afford 1 so this is the next best thing that I could find.

Apparently roo leather is good but have not found much on it so far to read up on.

Cow leather is still best as it's far more durable and more available. Looking around, the average thickness is around 3-4mm so I am guessing around the 8-10oz rating. Old man is letting me have his strop when he finds it.

I may look at getting 1 like TD posted earlier as I don't think his will last very long as it hasn't been used in who knows how long.

It does swing like a pendulum, but as you move it along the blade you rotate the the stone to keep it flat to the blade.
Only limit to this style of sharpener is the length if the blade.
The bigger theblade the bigger the radius needed.
Pros of this style is it keeps the correct angle. Yes it flattens a little as you move to the outside of the machines limits, but if you have big blades get a bigger machine.

Must be a grey area, spent all morning putting a decent edge to it,
and didn't cut myself, finished it on some wet/dry 2000. Now I need to wait
until I go away next to try it. I purchased what I thought was an Arkansas whet stone
But ended up only being the box with a normal grey aluminium oxide stone,
but it did come in a very nice cypress pine box, those Japanese stones are way too pricey for me
Here's two more I found big one is a tramotina the other was to replace one my father had, great for splicing larger rope

@ Kallen heres an idea for your knife

Just saw this TD. Bloody awesome looking knife.
Any idea on how to black a knife?? Is it just paint?? Or is it a process like etching??

threedogs
2nd January 2014, 01:49 PM
To black it and stop from rusting, get some dirty sump oil ,dirtier the better, get it a nice cherry red or hotter. then wipe with the sump oil on a rag.
there'll be heaps of smoke and it'll stink. I did some gate latches and they have been in the elements for over one year now, they just look black no rust whats so ever
just don't burn yourself

Very nice did you now the original Bowie knife of Jim Bowie fame had soft brass down the back of the blade.
when fighting another knife wielding chap if Jim blocked the others knife that blade would stick in the brass and not slide.
Just one of those useless info thingys lol

Read through this and the real Bowie had a thing called the "Spanish Notch"

Still waiting on 4 x knives to arrive an got my eye on a vintage Solinger Bowie with a 170 blade, and about 285 over all

Heres a very nice Damascus Bowie

@ Kallen it says to use a paste, I was thinking of a mild cutting paste,
but the more I read it was a paste to preserve the strop. So I'm only going to use Dubbins saddle soap.
I love this stuff, still comes in the same round yellow tin from day dot.

Late edit::: OK put some Dubbins on the strop and picked one of my very sharp Mundial camp knives to try.
Blow me down it removes a very fine flap/burr not sure but after a few strops That knife was sharper than its ever been
Now I have to strop all My knives this will take for ever. LOL boders on dangerous that knife now, happy camper again

That whole earth shop has some well priced Bowie blanks as well.
Still trying to find the shape of the original "sand bar fight" Bowie
From memory It had to have a brass strip on the spine, And the Spanish Notch
to catch a blade and long enough to use as a paddle, all I know is the first was made from a file.
They say the blacksmith who made it found the real recipe of Damascus, not what we call Damascus today
More research lol Blade size 5" -24"

The below is a copied post from another forum

It is funny because damascus steel originated over that way in the early 500 - 1000 and the viking sword +ulfberh+t was made of high carbon steel 1000 years ahead of anything else and rumour has it that the indians traded this steel (crucible steel) on the vulgar trade route from 800-1000 ad and the indians at that time were making swords using high quality damascus that they some how managed to imbed nano tubes in the steel which science has only just discovered and no one can replicate it to my knowledge. Anyhow its ironic that the beat damascus was made over there and now the poor grade is made over there. A lot has changed in 1000 years haha!

Sweet. It will depend on how the bolsters are fastened. The 2 I am making at the moment have a single pin in the top bolster which also secures the blade and the bottom bolster has 2 pins securing the bottom back spring in place.

If you can see the pins then very easy to replace, bit harder if the pins are hidden inside as part of the top boslter unless the top bolster is only a civer for show then it should pop off

Check link to Bowie knife History, I remember all this from watching JIM bowie as a kid.
Basically its a short sword for knife fighting the original knife had the brass strip to catch a blade when fending off a blow.
It also had a "Spanish Notch" on the back of the cutting edge to break opponents blades.
Good read about the Sand bar fight when he beat 3 attackers thus the Bowie knife was born

Ive seen that alot on the Bowie's 3D, with the brass strip, but why do they do it?

In-laying that brass is made by a serious blacksmith.

I haven't hunted in years 3D, and even then, I usually only take one knife with me that does all.

As far as making daggers and swords go, for me, it is all about the artisry of the craft. If I was still in the army and in combat, all bets are off.

Gonna be in the crap for this 1 but just ordered a Gerber LMF II fixed blade with strap cutter, leg straps, built in sharperner and is also MOLLE compatible.

That will be me done for awhile on getting knives.

LOL....We can be in the dog box together! Have bought 2 knives and a straight razor since following the diablolically clever thread that manipulates me in to purchasing knives against my will! And I thought I was done with buying knives.... Bwaaahahahaha.

That is almost (or actually is) identical to the first knife I was given as a kid! If memory serves, the handle is stacked leather? Even remember it having the same colours. Damned if I know what happened to it.... I think I broke the handle, throwing it at a tree, playing Daniel Boone!

Buck will honour any knife anywhere in the world, you send them the knife and they will replace any worn or broken parts. At their descretion
If its too far gone they will replace your knife, They will email you if knife has sentimental value.

I was wondering about the similarity with the Fiskars axe and Gerbers. But sometimes the companies purchase manufacturing rights so they can make limited copies of the good designs.

As for the Bowie s being a limited edition, I would say that unless there are heaps of that particular design sold, they wont make a lot of them. As you can see on the budK site, the collection of Hibben knives they have by not only Gil but his brother as well. I am not really in to collecting knives with a view to make money.
