Would prefer a light brown if possible and on the left hip for a RH draw.
Been farting around in the shed and made a transit box for my Ghillie kettle.
Just make a cube and cut off a lid. just need some hinges and an over centre catch,
should be well protected now for years to come.
Might add I hate working with timber, I love the look of it but I missed the bus when it comes to making
boxes etc from it lol

Box looks good.
Will try and retain the neutral leather colour otherwise it will be a light brown.
No probs on the left hand carry, will start them today and should have stamps by end of the week

Here's a few of my torches, one on the top bolts to a rifle, then my new underwater torch,
next is just a bright general purpose torch followed by Mr reliable P7. All have a molle style pouch except the underwater job.
My 6 D cell and 4 D cell and mini Maglites have all been retired, shame as they are an awesome torch, to replace them I have a 55 HID torch
boy is that bright

oncedisturbed

I have a few of the P5's and they are great.
I did the led conversion on my 5C cell maglite and it rocks.
I have 1 of the lenser taclites under the barrel of my 22 and it is great. No needing a spotlight any more unless in a vehicle

I LOVE working with timber 3D! It's amazing what can be achieved with it and some of the grains are incredible.... makes great scales! I am biased though, being a chippy by trade.

I love timber the grain etc , should have paid more attention at school lol, some of my antique furniture is over 200 yrs old , but that is patina

Had to retire the 6 cell mag as it was costing way to much to fill with batteries.
Wish the 55watt HID torch was more a spot beam it would be awesome then

Thanks GKO I have 5 ice boxes from 1856 to 1930 the 1856 is made from red cedar,
another is made from silky oak and 3 are basic pine. They are filled with either cork chips or wheat husks, Silky oak one serves as a great wine rack, the pine ones serve to house dry dog food and bird seed to keep the mice out. The one pictured will be returned to Mudski to give to his Dad, I have another top loader that is half finished ATM. That will house tools of some description[ green/white number]
Bummer nothing arrived in the post,

I bought 4 of these they are 5watt, might be bright enough for camp lights ,but having a magnified lens it will have a cut off point[no distance]
Thinking 4 mounted in a Jaycar plastic box, as stated will try tonight and see how bright one is. Power wise should be great, but the camp lights I have now are awesome.

@ OD brown is fine ,

Here's the front, it had no cork chips inside, the sides were Masonite which I changed to pine boards,
the lower door is completely different and neater IMO, the interior is enamelled steel and in good nic.
The top is ply which I injected with aquahere as it had bubbled. Hindsight which I have plenty of
I would re do the main door in pine boards to match the sides , but I have kept it as was back in 1950
They make great entertainment storage units, wine cellars and CD storage. Pretty happy with this one and hope Mr Mudski feels the same

nice up swept clip point on the bowie, wasn't sure about the Pakka wood handle

I have the Tactical branded field dressing kit which for a cheap set is pretty good fir skinning etc, may be an option to look at.

The BG knife is only approx 6" in total size which is pretty handy with it's range if movement, no good for boning though.

I will try find a link to dressing kit that has changeable blades and is a lockback knife so it makes it a small size to carry and store. From memory it is made by Elk Ridge.

Still waiting on the stamps etc coming from NSW, post is getting slower and slower.

Cheers mate if you could find it, that'd be awesome. I'm just starting my kit atm on a few goats and the DR knifes are a bit big at around 5 & 6" but they're give me room to play with if we decide to slaughter some pigs. @ George that small blade Hook is for cutting belts or webbing material, the point on the end is for smashing car windows.
Pentridge jail officers had larger version for prisoners who tried to hang themselves.
You could put hook between neck and rope and cut rope without cutting neck.
I even have it on my underwater torch.

Let me know how you go with getting the browning rescue knife delivered from outside Aus as it has the thumb stub because Customs seized mine awhile back because it was classed as a single hand opening knife and not pemitted to import.

They frown on double egded knives/swords and any assisted opening knife.

Stamps just got delivered so I can finish off your sheathes tonight and put them in the mail tomorrow for you if you could pm your details?

Bought munchkin a DIY pocket knife and mini mag sheath kit for his birthday to make, not a bad little kit.

Will end up copying the template and modding it slightly as well.

That blade is very flexible it has another blade on the top edge, and great when you cut into the vent of a fish, I'll put a pic here later of it.
Great fillet knife, The white bit in the picture is just a point protector, most knives you buy will have this in place.

Not really the angle you sharpened them is the angle you need to steel them too.
Main reason butchers don't lend knives as you steel naturally differently to say me.
Don't saw with a knife if you have to sharpen the knife. Don't force knife , you know all this
anyway, might need a stainless glove?

The kukuri is genuine and is one of my favorites. It has an edge you have to feel to believe and, having used it in the field to chop and dig, it just keeps going! (I have neglected it for a long time and need to remedy that.)

The smaller Tanto I have, from Cold Steel, is on youtube cutting a 1 1/4in free standing manila rope in a single horizontal slash. The punched through a car door and the cut on the rope preformed again. Its why the Tanto IS my favorite.

Knowing where the blades originated and what they can do, the fact that some are made from car springs makes no difference to me. No dramas then, see how i go!

Those khurki knife looks alot like they're middle eastern type of blade ?? The shape of it has me intrigued especially the little knifes that come with them, would they be throwing knifes ??

The Khukri knife originated in Nepal. It was taken on by the Gurkha Army regiments around the world. It is more of a short machete than anything else and was used as a tool more than a knife by the Nepalese.

We had an exercise with the Ghurkas years ago. They were to play the part of the enemy. We asked them how we would know if they killed us and were told that they would attack at night and that our boot laces would be cut, simulating us having our throats cut.

Being the smart, war savvy soldiers we were and not about to be taken down by a bunch of hillbilly dwarves from some God-forsaken frozen place, we came up with the brilliant plan to keep our boots on at night and, as we were sleeping in underground trench just big enough to lie in that was about 6 feet long and about 3 feet by 3 feet square at the mouth, we would make sure our boots were at the end of the pit.

When we woke up in the morning, those sneaky little mofo's had paid us all a visit in the night. None of the posted sentries had seen a thing and all, to a man, had had our boot laces cut.

The Ghurkas are considered one of the best fighting forces on the planet, and given what I know and have heard about them, I concur.

As for the little "Knives" in the scabbard, they are actually sharpening and honing pieces....

The mob I got mine from in the link above have a similar set like you link for around $20 plus postage and are in VIC from memory.

I chose the larger pack as I wanted as much "prepper" gear as I could just in case for remote trips, still looking for lighter / multi purpose gear as I go.

Pack came with the belt bag and I added the other pouches, the black molle clips on the front of the pack are awesome clips, many sellers of them now around the $30 mark for 50 clips

Same here but you never know.
Missus and munchkin both want to see Tassie at some point so may do a stop over in Mexico, haven't been since I was a kid.

Working on 2 more crossdraw sheathes at the moment and have to double plate the backing as the leather is fairly thin, will be a heavy duty set once finished.

Thats a great story mate, would've been some angry people in the morning lol

@ George click on the link to the Kukri shop and it tells the story and of the two small knives.interesting specs too http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151299237165?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&clk_rvr_id=634186908619 @ GKO sounds like Up the Kyber pass all over again.lol I like the fact the spine is nearly 10mm and the RC tests different like a samurai sword blade. Hopefully the one I buy is army issue. Playing with the Molle vest boy is that going to be warm in winter time. not many pouches but the guy at airsoft is looking after me. Family 4x4 does a bit of shooting I wonder if he uses a gut hook of some description

They're a great looking knife especially that one with the polished brass and black handle, it really sets off the high polish finish of the blade. I rekon it'll look great on a mantle as a show piece! I have a mate from Nepal, when i see him next i'll show him these and see what he thinks is the best size blade lol

Nope nothing has come in the mail yet. Will check tracking in a minute

Puritabs / water purification tabs normally have a shelf life of around 5 years.

Don't bother buying any from camp stores or chemists (chemist warehouse prices aren't to bad) as I bought 4 boxes of 50 or 100 tabs in each (from memory) from UK fleabay store for $20 delivered and have them squirreled away everywhere including in munchkin's cadet gear and survival pouch.

Normally it's 1 tab per litre of water and must leave it at least 30 mins before drinking, the longer the better and will have a slight chlorine task to it.

There are tabs called neutralising tabs that are 1 tab for each puritab to assist in getting rid of the chlorine taste from either chlorine or iodine based puritabs / powder.

Alitis007

Like i said mate it was cheap, the bloke at the market had $15 on it and i walked away with it for under $10 lol. If and when the hilt breaks ( still very soft and rubbery ) the ally cap on the bottom unscrews so i should be able to change it with maybe a home made wooden handle, Maybe polished red gum??

That's crap with the proposed laws in QLD, it will target everyone now including tourists.

There is a mob in the US called "Knife Rights" who actively petition against draconian laws such as these, pity they aren't here as this will have a national flow on affect if it is passed.

No idea on the notch on the kukhri, Gecko would be best to answer that query.

Top one needs to be sharper where i the cutting edge turns i think and its pretty heavy too.

Middle one has a spring loaded blade, is that even legal ???

Bottom, great blade from browning i'll see how long it takes before i need to sharpen it.

So i got to use the field dress kit yesterday, the small knife i didn't use coz its too small and to me i'd probably use it more as a general knife for eating and preparing food. The skinner with the gut hook is no good for goats but it'll be better on pigs and deer, the gut hook tore right thru everything with ease but i pierced the stomach ( poh! What a smell lol) but i think i might have held it on the wrong angle?? Dunno... I did find that the skinner needed a fine sharpen tho coz it didn't cut how i expected it to unless i got used to how the DR's were cutting. Now i need to find a pig to try it on hahaha

If you want a ridgy didge one, check out Khukuri house. I bought a utility knife(its called a churi) off them and while the finish isn't museum quality, it's a solid piece of kit. They make all kinds of Khukuris and supply the Nepalese army. If your pockets are a bit deeper, theres Himalayan imports.

More than likely as most are now drop forged on a production line as opposed to hand forged.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread I was pleasantly surprised how well the Tactical (Anaconda) branded knife held it's edge after using to clean up some wood for munchkin to whittle on, that's something I do need to get is a nice whittling slip joint folder.

My Excalibur slip joint is another surprise with how well it holds and edge as well and that is always on my belt with my leatherman and both used daily though I admit using a ceramic rod once a fortnight helps :)

Will be interesting to see how my kukchette performs once I get it.

What style of tobacco pouch was your youngen after TD? I can make up a drawstring pouch similar to the ring pouch I posted a pic of the other day or is he after more of a bilfold style? If so I will draw up some designs for you to show him.

He turned his nose up and said they aren't sharp, so I said try mine, to which his reply was OMG or similar.
was lucky that weekend as I just threw so knives in for the trip. Yep cut the beegeezus out of my hand reaching into a milk crate to grab something
someone put the knives in handle first blade up, boy did I let fly. all was good when the bleeding stopped LOL

@ OD pouch style two press studs was his reply, if that makes sense, let me know the details
Drove up Wilcannia just for the weekend from Melb lol 14-15hrs from memory

Not good on cutting yourself, do it all the time as well. I am using a curved vinyl blade to shape the edges of leather gear and always hit my thumbs.

With the leather used, I would soak for around 10 mins in luke warm water and slowly shape it to the knife. Only needs a thin layer of glad wrap to cover tje knife it doesnt get wet.

Slowly let it without applying heat etc to it as it may crack if dried to quickly.

I think my tobacco pouch is what he means, fold over flap that has a slit for the papers etc.

Will see what I can come up with, may even buy another really cheap pouch and strip it back and improve the style as a lot of them now are as thin as gladwrap.

[QUOTE=oncedisturbed;508088]Very true, the others are more GP knives or hollywood styled knives, not so much user friendly.

If I could only carry 2 knives to cover everything it would be my LMF II Gerber and a kukhri type machette, get to cover everyrhing then

lol... as it happens, the only two knives I used to carry on my webbing, in the army, was a Gerber MkII and my khukri. Best combo!

Did my 50/50 ATF/Acetone cocktail earlier, let it soak in for a good while, then remembered that I need to buy a new bit of RHS to use as the handle on my action wrench, just in time for Bunnings and Masters to be closed. D**ks. Looks like it's going to get to sit overnight now.

What would you use that sort of knife for?? Having one edge would it be more for shaving or scraping rather than cutting??

That second sharpening system looks like it'll be better for larger/ wider blades yeah?? I'm asking about about the sharpening systems coz i'm looking for a good one for wider blades like for cleavers and bowie type knifes coz i'm not confident in myself with using the old fashion stone lol, plus using the lansky its pretty fool proof so great for me hahaa
was reading some knife forum yesterday and they were putting down Good makes of knives having no edge retention at all and general build quality is well crap. I'm thinking this is the case with knifes being made elsewhere from poor steel. Probably why you see Our fore fathers knives are still around and sharp to this day. I like my older knives compared to all the newer ones

I've found that knifes that rust like 440 and high grade ss and high carbon steel keep their edge longer. I've found most knifes today are chemically sharpened so they never really have that fine "bur" that makes it really sharp. I was told ( it could be wrong tho) when you sharpen a knife your creating a bur that you work to the centre of the blade and the cutting edge is to be fine cut to be polished so its as smooth as possible so you can keep the cutting edge flat as you can.

@ George.... How about this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Skinner-Hunting-Knife-Wood-Handle-With-Sheath-Sharp-/251495283995?pt=AU_KnivesSwords&hash=item3a8e497d1b

In the last couple of days i'm surprised how many people i know that have worked in animal processing, what i've found out is that most people use a rigid and a semi rigid boning knifes for lamb / goats for processing up untill you need something heavier like a cleaver or saw. Most of the skinners i see on ebay are curved blades and more suited for animals with tough skin that needs to be cut away unlike the goats we did where we inflated the carcass to separate the skin from the meat the used our knuckles to skin it occasionally using the knife to cut away the fat that didn't unstick. The gut hook isn't really needed but if you had it it'll save you a whole 2 seconds lol

I'll then use Brasso and some wet/dry then I'll buff the edge like I did on my Buck 119br with the cocobolo handle and 6" blade [see pic]
They are sharp and stay sharp IMO, My cast iron knifes are awesome for holding and edge.

They're nice looking blades on both of those! How hard do you think it'll be to re shape the blades on them ?? I've been looking at some cheap knifes on ebay but thinking of re styling the blade closer to a boning type knife but more of a cross between boning and sticking .

No point as you would need to re-heat treat them and then temper then, sharpen then re-temper again to demagnetise them again before final sharpening.

Better buying a knife blank already done and make the handles up and sharpen how you wish.

Just scored a SOG machette for $33 delivered. Google the Sogfari kukri and have a look, sweet shape and size and very good brand.

I was only looking at the fact you can score some half decent knifes for real cheap, like this one i scored last night for $7 lol

But wanted to cut it down to a boning knife shape then re temper the cutting edge, all i need is quenching oil. But then i came across this

Which should do what i need, just need to see how it is when i get it.

Gecko that knife is a skinner yeah?? On the weekend we only used the boning knifes for everything and from what i'm told in the old days they did the same. I'm hoping that sticker will be able to cut the throats and sever the spinal cord and not damage the tip because its a touch wider than a boning knife.

I also scored this for $10

With just a polish the brass will stay shiny, if it dulls off you can touch it up with cotton wadding polish like Never dull or a quality billet metal polish like Peel or even Deep purple. All those products would have taken the thick patina off the torch like the little bit where the brand name was but i used the josco cut and polishing wheels on a bench grinder. I've got tons of other metal polishes that i've used to maintain the polished ally on the dish on the rims on my mazda lol so i can tell you whats good and whats not :) so i rekon with a bit of time and elbow grease that stove would come up a treat as well. What type of metal is it mate from ?? I've also got an old shoe iron that i got from my grandfather that i want to polish but don't know weather to leave it buffed with the cast pit marks in it or smoothen it out and give it a mirror finish lol

Looking at the logo in the pic that sanjia knife i got, your definitely right about the re branding thing, they probably do it to keep selling and making old designs that their more expensive brand doesn't use anymore. Same thing that tyre companies do with their popular molds

That looks nice but too me it looks like it its missing something, i cant put my finger on it but i keep looking at the handle for some reason..... Dunno whats missing... Still looks good tho!!

It appears almost identical to my Tactical branded knife without the crappy teeth they put in. If it is as good as the other then I will be happy

does some leather form better than others ??
Heres an idea for carrying a spare battery

oncedisturbed
24th May 2014, 06:15 PM
Yep there are differences in leather depending on thickness and tanning process will depend on how it finishes at the end.

4-6 Oz soft leather will form better than a similar leather tanned longer to make it stiffer, think saddle leather being very hard wearing. Am learning the water hardening process at the moment which changes leather dramatically depending on temp of water and how long you soak it

will need a new leather belt shortly, I have some belt buckles that don't require stitching so I take they are easier to make
sort of Cowboy style, I have a R.M.Williams one. years and years ago we made them
out of Triumph motor bike tank badges but no idea now how to do it
I'll put a pic of the buckle up later'

I am trying to find somewhere that sells the blank belt lengths cheaply, most places I have access to are around $45 a pop and that is without buckle, length holes or finishing

If I can find decent sheets of leather cheap enough, it will make it cheaper cutting them all from a sheet, pain the ar$e but cheaper

I only use a cotton buff on my 8" grinder, Once polished if you wish to display them with no repolishing a good clear lacquer with keep the polish nice and bright, I have 6 fire nozzles up to 450,, tall when polished I'll clear powder coat them. All my brass mortar and pestle I leave as they are antique and require patina. I grab a pic of the steam engine header tank from 1850, that will look awesome finished About 800 tall by 450 round, here it is I love this thing, rivets and lead joints Split PVC around the base of the clothes lines is to stop the Male dogs urine rusting the base off, very strong stuff
I have these for my bench grinder

44986

They work a treat, just wear a face shield or you'll cop a face full of wax haha. I've missed placed them but when i find them i'll see how the go on a couple of old fishing knifes i've got and see how they buff out the scratches.

What are you going to turn the tank into ??? I got give a block from a 350 chev with a bent rod and a hole in the side of it the size of a grape fruit i want to clean up and turn into a coffee table. You call you back yard man land lol my workshop is man land haha theres a few v8 laying about, a few unfinished resto's plus i have a half restored 1969 Mc Culloch super 10 10 chainsaw. I was given to me with a stuffed coil so i repaired it but the carby is stuffed so to make it run i need to adjust the mixtures while i start it the make it either run flat out idle lol

@ Alitis not sure on the tank but polished up it would look great on a rod. Not the wax in the face but the little bits of cotton on you eye lashes that shites me. The yellow it only Galmet spray can,
@ OD what about sourcing leather for either India or Pakistan, seems to me to price might be right

First load of goodies just got delivered.

Both sets of throwing knives, bery nice indeed.

The interchangeable field kit isn't bad at all, sheath is a bit tight with the saw blade though. Wouldn't want to cut down trees with the axe head but small branches should be ok.

First of two kukhri's came in, nice blade and weight, crap sheath as it is very loose fit and paper thin, will knock up a new sheath for it.

Should hopefully have some more today from USPS touchwood

Its around 30" long! You'd need a huge chopping board and a massive fish to cut down to sashimi size pieces
