OK, here's something a bit different. The following pictures are in the Grampians. No secret there. In this part of the Grampians it looks a bit like a swamp, or the leftover from a flood but it's not. It is like this all year round. The water is clear and where it goes under the road in at least three places, it flows fairly fast.

Nearby this place is a sign. It is the only identifier of this place. What does the sign say?

Pretty sure it's not Keep River or Gregory NP's, & not the Macdonnell ranges, which probably means it's in Kakadu. It looks right for Kakadu, but where I'm not sure. Seems like quite a 'major' dirt road. I'll guess at the road to Jim Jim falls as that's one we didn't go on. Am I any warmer?

Sorry, Cuppa!

I understood what you meant, just not why you were saying it. :) A reasonable point to make, Woods Point which could be anywhere in Australia, is in fact between Walhalla & Jamieson, North Gippsland, Vic.

Identifying places both by name & location is something we should strive to do. Sometimes it's easy to forget that the name of a place is insufficient for others to locate it.

Wife & I must have been amongst the few Australians who missed all the coverage. We spent some time in remote jungle parts of Vanuatu whilst it was all happening. Flew back into Oz & had an overnighter in Melbourne before returning home. Sitting in a cafe having brekky in the morning I was reading a newspaper in which there was something about some disaster that had occurred. The article clearly made assumptions about what was common knowledge. I asked someone where Beaconsfield was & they looked at me strangely & asked if I had been on another planet. Comparing our surroundings then to what they had been like a few days previously it did feel like we had indeed been on another planet!

About time .
Its` in the Karoonda Pioneer park, I organized a tour of all the buildings in the park a short time ago for the club I`m involved in.
The tour lasted about 90 minutes and our guide Don Anderson gave us some great insight in to the past glory's of the many exhibits on display.
It`s a great place for kids to learn a little of the hardships our forefathers went through to open up this country we call home

TD your guessing but yes Milprinka
It is an original building and now houses the information center.Quite a few buildings are being re furbished and this was just one.
When we were there a few years ago there was free camping along side the pub and the folks in the info center were most helpful.

Cuppa
16th July 2013, 06:14 PM
I went to Milparinka once, about 23 years ago. Our first experience of the outback. It was virtually a ghost town, certainly no info centre, about half a dozen residents, including the young lad who did his best to sell me a lizard, & the pub. That was about it. I thought the pub had closed down since. Sounds like it's a relative metropolis these days.

Left 'town' after a couple of sherbets in the pub. Driving our old HQ Premiere station Wagon (Nellie) 253, Trimatic auto & limited slip diff, & towing a trailer with our two trail bikes on it, headed for Tibooburra with intent to camp out in the Sturt Stoney desert. After driving for around 45 minutes we saw a 4wd coming toward us in the distance. He stopped some distance away from us & waved us down as we drew close, & asked where we were heading to. We told him, & he grinned, telling us we were on the wrong road, @ was at pains to tell us that had we not been lucky enough to come across him, we'd have kept driving until we ran out of fuel in the middle of the desert.

Cuppa
19th July 2013, 10:03 PM
Yep Betoota it is. A mate of mine had a few beers there when it was still open. He reckoned that the publican sized up his customers & charged according to whether he liked them or not. If he liked you, you got charged the normal rate, if he didn't each successive beer cost 50 cents more than the last one. He was the publican there for many years, & then sold out to another at a very good price. The new owner failed to make a go of it in this very isolated spot, & two years later sold it back to Simon, the original publican, for a song.

Yeppoon is a great little coastal town .When we visited there a couple of years ago there was a museum dedicated to the great Peter Brock.
Sadly it`s not there any more. We spent close to 3 hours there as it was such a comprehensive collection of Peters memorabilia. A couple of his cars were not there as they were competing at a race meeting somewhere. Even worst was that my camera had packed it in a day or so earlier.

Its in a place now called Tomakin which changed from Sunpatch in the mid 1980's. This shot is of the old boat ramp that is right next to the house that my grandfather built back in the 1960's and where I spent quite a few school holidays swiming and fishing in the river right there. Fresh Oysters from the rocks, yabbies for bait and plenty of room to run around.

Magic place. Although it has changed from a very small village to a growing town with quite a lot more people now than ever before.

Where does the ferry leave from? The tip itself or somewhere else? No way known will I miss out on getting across to the islands when I eventually get up there. Is the ferry for foot passengers only or does it take vehicles?

Seems the road to the tip is not really a challenge any more. A friend & his wife are up there at the moment, got up to the tip without difficulty in their 2wd, low clearance 7 metre, wide bodied Isuzu bus based motor home. Not sure if they were towing their Suzuki 4wd as usual. I asked how they went with river crossings, & they said there were just two, both with a ferry.
