Hello... looking for help.. Nissan Patrol 1989 cassette

    Hi there,
I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a car guy...
I've been given the task however to try and fix a 1989 Nissan Patrol GQ018? cassette player.
I'm wondering if there is any documentation/schematics on the unit that are available?
While I'm able to work on older hi-fi gear, tape recorders etc... car cassette units are something I'm unfamiliar with.
The guy I'm trying to fix this for says everything else on the car works, so he is bummed out the tape player is a 'no go'.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Rick

    Hi Rick.
    Does it turn on?

If it does and do not play, I'd start checking the rubber bands. The cassette drive gears are connected to the electric motor by rubber bands and they have surely dried out at this age.

I would do a check of the physical model number of the cassette unit with the manufacturer. If you cannot make headway there, it may be a lost cause depending on the fault, as Bazzi has suggested the simplest 'mechanical' issue fix is the drive. I wish you luck.

Biggest fault on cassette players is that most people turn off the vehicle while still listening to the music. This leaves a rubber wheel with pressure applied. Either the tape sticks or the wheel gets a flat spot and that is when tapes get chewed up.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Its funny Dhuck, I took a ride in a mint original 1991 Patrol GQ recently that is totally factory, not a mark or bastardisation taken place and the fitment of the cassette player just finishes it off. i agree it was a horrible media in its time.

Oi! My old GU has one and I deliberately kept a couple of my favourite teenage cassettes just so I could play them on road trips in it. Even had FF-to-next-song capability! I bloody loved it. And that unit still works by the way!!

    Gong him Red!!
