Thanks guys - I finally worked it out. As Mudski & the evil twins mentioned, it helps to hold in the correct orientation. What really helped was finding that there is a small ball bearing that actuates the locking pawl & when it moves it locks the pawl. very fine to hold it at the right angle but it does work.
