Are these CVs ok?

Hi Guys,

I've been keeping an eye on a grease or oil leak from CV joint(left side/passenger side).
It looks like grease, rather than oil by the looks and feel of it.
I remember greasing the king pin bearings from top and bottom few years back, and I used general purpose grease.
I might have over greased it.
I think I also made a mistake by applying thin layers of silicone sealant to the king pin bearing caps shims.
I thought (wrongly) that might help with any possible grease leaks out of those caps.
So, I'm not sure whether I've caused some damage to bearings by doing that.

Grease or oil comes out of the scraper. Do I need to replace the scraper?

P.S. I gave it a good wipe and clean and I'm hoping to watch it during next drive or so, unless it needs critical attention.

Are you getting splatter on your tyres? I believe you should be using high speed grease and if it is grease then yes you've used too much

Probably not so much on tyres, but definitely oozing out of the scraper. There's definitely grease in it, but I dunno it's all grease though.
I'm hoping it's not diff oil leaking from the axle seal near CV. I probably need a good drive to find out whether it leaks it again fast enough, and I should check the diff oil level anyway.
Yeah, I reckon you're right. I probably shouldn't have used general purpose grease, 'cos it's something that turns a lot when on 4WD, isn't it?!
I obviously used too much grease. Back then, few years ago, I didn't know there's such thing as too much grease.

Nope, should look dry. As long as it's not pitting/rusting it looks fine to me.

Ok, cool. That means I obviously have a problem with left side one, either too much grease, a failed grease scraper or if I'm unlucky enough, bad axle seal(I guess).

BTW, scrapers should be renewed after a while, don't they?
I mean, with the dust & crud getting into them all the time, they would wear out in no time, wouldn't they?!!

Is it important to replace them, to keep the kingpins & CVs healthy?

Smell a small sample of the stuff. If it pongs like diff oil then you have a problem.

Usually it's a sign that your inner axle seal is letting diff oil past and into your cv's.

Yeah, I did. I couldn't smell much of diff oil in it, but the looks on greasy stuff on the CV looks shiny & greasy towards thick oil like diff oil
rather than grease, but the build up of goo under it is more grease than oil.
I've been driving on front wheels lately for few errands around the area while the rear driveshaft is out.
So, I reckon that triggered more goo to ooze out of the CV on the left side. No apparent issues with the right side though.

Perhaps it's the heating grease from kingpins that turns more liquid and comes out of the CV.

BTW, there was a little bit of similar stuff leaking out of the side of the hub lock unit outside as well.
So, I'm guessing I have a problem and perhaps better to pull it out and have a look or have a spare CV, axle & an axle seal ready.
