easy way to get tdc on td42

G'day again Mac,
I read these posts in the wrong order but you're on a few winners here aren't you?
TDC is in principle, easy to find, at least using my dear departed daddy's method and I used it for about 15 years on my TD42. PROVIDED you have a manual.
Put it in top gear, hang onto the bull bar and give it a pull forward. Keep bouncing it as hard as you can and belt tension will crank it slowly over until you reach TDC..May cost a rooted back or something but that's what real men do. I think.
Difficulty is in seeing the tiny mark on the wheel/pulley. It's beautifully placed by Mr. Nissan behind guards/covers/bullshit etc. but with a torch you'll get it. With luck. Once you have, slap some white paint or whiteout on it as I did on my first FC Holden recently. About '57.. Means it's easy to see for the rest of your life.
Got an auto? Dunno what but if I suggest the same, never having owned an auto, I'll happily stand corrected. As for the rest, sorry mate, I'm lost.

thanks col yeah my old man did it the same way lol but my drive has a downward slope so not a good idea here lol

I always found the easiest way was to remove the Glow Plug from N#1
scrunch up a tissue, and plug that in the Glow Plug hole
wind over - by hand - the Crank or the Power Steering pulleys
when the tissue pops out, your at TDC

What valve clearance did you set?

Are you sure you were on TDC on the compression stroke and not on the overlap?

it all pretty much works on the same principal as a petrol motor. so it is all coming easier just needed to make sure i was correct and it all turned out right but there are other issues que sera sera

can't remember when that applied to me last.....Oh well.
Seem to vaguely remember that when you had TDC you were either ready to set clearances on one set of 6 valves or the other. Not sure now but I think if they were supposed to be open but weren't, I just reset the other six.
Jeez, I hate computers and turbos. Those were the days,

thats correct col tdc on 1 was 1 3 5 10 11 12 i think and then tdc on 6 was 2 4 6 7 8 9 i think i have not got the piece of paper in front of me ........

The td valve sequence is different to the tb sequence. I hope your bit of paper says different to what you wrote here.

Td42 on #1 tdc- 1,2,4,5,8 and 9
#6 tdc- 3,6,7,10,11 and 12
