Jump-starting needs good and thick copper in the cables, a lot of cheap cables have thick insulation but very little copper. Don't try and start a car straight after putting on cables, let it sit for a few minutes for energy to get back in the sad battery, this will allow it as well as cables to supply enough current to get her going.
The rattle noise sounds more like a different issue of oil not getting to the top of the valve train quickly. A very good reason to never rev up a motor just started. Check oil and ensure right grade for motor in the current weather conditions.
