No we didn’t get there, but I know of it & I think I may have seen a similar photo somewhere in the past. Next time I’m up that way I’ll give it a look if he’s still around.
Ok, not sure if this will be easy or hard. Either name the river or name the small outack ‘government’ town who’s water supply is from the apparatus shown. (Presumably they filter it). Name both for extra kudos. Note the shape of the river banks & the hinged ‘pontoon’ giving an indication as to the rise & fall of water levels. Plenty of clues there.

Stab in the dark here, looks like the Darling around Pooncarie.
Not the Darling, & you are going to have to stab quite a lot further north (by around 1500kms as the crow flies) .......... almost due north in fact. Dunno if it helps (‘cos I don’t know how widespread they are) but I caught a good sized Yellowbelly just out of shot.

Has to be inland and not too far north as the rivers run clear in the tropics
so maybe a river around Mt Isa
Leichhardt river is my guess
