2006, TD42ti wagon with 285 tyres. I want to swap diffs from 3.9s to 4.1s. I don't want to fork out money for a 4.1 only to find it doesn't fit and I've done my dough. Can someone clearly tell me how I can recognise/ID a 4.1 diff that will fit straight into where my 3.9s came from before I buy it? I don't care how long winded your explanation is so long as it's helpful. Hoping someone can help, Deevo.
You need to know what rear diff you have first. H260 or the smaller H233b. Just count the number of bolts holding the centre in to tell. H260 has 12 and the H233 has 11.
Fronts are the same. Dont get centres from a ute. Even if they are the same centres as you. Because the utes use a smaller axle spline in the rears. So they must be from a wagon.
Otherwise its very straight forward.

Anywho..
If the diff is still in the car you will see on the Vin number what ratio it is.
Given that the diffs are original.
If they are out then simply count the main crown gear teeth and devide that by the smaller pinion gear teeth..
That'll give you the ratio.

Thanks for that Mudski. My diffs are HG39 with 11 bolts so therefore I have H233 diffs with a 3.9:1 ratio. They are the original diffs (I've had the car since new). If I'm understanding you correctly, this means I can safely buy any 4.1 diff and expect it to bolt straight into the respective banjo (whether it be front or rear) providing it is NOT out of a ute. Correct? Thanks for your help -it's what I was after.
