Water in fuel question / water in fuel warning light?

Hi guys, I have just bought a 96 GQ Patrol 4.2 TD 330k on the clock. The water in fuel light has come on. It wasn't on when i bought it but only a few hours later when it was home i went to start it again the warning light was showing and the charm sounding when i turn the ignition off. Today i opened the bottom of the filter and drained the water until i got strait diesel. Some other mold like bits came out too.

The problem is the light is still on. Is this normal? Does it go off after a period of time? Im worried to drive it with this light on in case i irreversible damage.

I have just bought a CAV fuel filter to go in which fits into the original head in the hope that i can monitor the water contamination without relying on the warning light.

Looking for your opinions and experience on this issue.

    Thanks.

Agree, change the original filter and install the CAV. I believe they go before the original filter but I've heard of guys having them behind as we..

The idea behind getting the CAV was so i could do few filter changes cheaply and keep a good eye on it until its sorted out. The CAV i just bought today over the phone from 4WD systems in SA and they are posting it out tomorrow. Its a type which screws into the old bracket so i can retain the priming pump.

When you say fuel treatment Roofy do you mean the flash lube stuff? Do you reckon i should drop the fuel from the tank only 10 litres in there or so.

Thats fine mate but if you got crap comming out the old filter, theres a good chance theres crap up the fuel line as well
after you trat your fuel you might need to change the filter ,anyway read the directions on the bottle
    good luck
