I destroyed one trying to see how much voltage my high frequency TIG was throwing out. Something went fizz bang pop and that nice burning electrical component smell filled the air.
As far as I know, the HF TIG have a very high voltage (1000 volts or more) on start up so an arc develops to prevent the electrode from touching the material to be welded. It was designed to weld aluminium. Once the arc is established, the volts drop and the current takes over.
