I suspect you are right. Who knows if they really do anything. They make the car legal though which is important.

Before I replaced my original exhaust I gutted the cat and I have a pyro gauge fitted , 4B was more responsive and on average 50 to 70 degrees cooler across the board , one downside was the exhaust fumes were much more noticeable on a still or cold day . I have no regrets buying a beaudesert 2 3/4 inch system with cat . A great product .
The price of excellence is dicipline , the cost of mediocrity is dissapointment .

My original cat had also started to disintegrate so it was gutted about 18 months ago. I did not have an EGT gauge but the car ran cooler (digital water temp via scangauge) and it was more responsive down low. Torque started coming on tap about 200rpm lower than before. Also had the middle muffler replaced with a hot dog. Was happy with it and looked standard. Boots, you are right about the exhaust fumes from the motor. Did notice that originally. Now with the new cat I will take note. Hopefully cleaner and healthier.
I only upgraded to 3 inch because I had the ECU remapped so went with a bigger exhaust. Car runs even cooler than before under normal driving conditions. I only had the EGT gauge fitted 3 days ago so have not had a chance to tow yet. For the last couple of months I have been a little hesitant in pushing the motor as I was not sure how hot it would get.

Around town the EGT temp sits between 220-300 degrees. After I picked the car up last Wednesday I took it for a drive north of Adelaide on the highway and if I pushed it (under acceleration) I could get it up around 400 degrees for a short time but once the speed was kept steady (100kph) it would drop to around the 350 degree mark. This was with aircon on and a warm day (30+).
Not had a chance to go up a big hill yet or tow. That will happen in the next week or two.
The EGt pyrometer is fitted just after the turbo in the dump pipe.

Yes a 5 speed manual.
I also let the car idle under the carport for a while and the exhaust smell was not as noticeable as before so it looks like the cat is definitely doing something.
The smell is Nitrogen Oxides.
NOX is a large contributing factor in the haze over cities.
When you have a Cat fitted to the exhaust the Oxides are significantly reduced by the catalyst (Palladium) converting them back to Nitrogen and Oxygen and the 'exhaust smell' a lot less noticeable.
Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.
You'd be hard pressed to find a good fitter that wouldn't fit one as their fines are huge, unless the vehicle is purely off road only.
