GPS what one? i have never had one

Hi guys, im looking for information about GPS', i have never had one and want one that has 4x4 maps on it. I only want a normal 6 or 7 inch one not a laptop or a big plotter. Whats peoples thoughts? what do you have/like?

I've had a few one is off road as well, but not able to offer any solid feedback.

The one I have has oztopo for off road, we put the well co-ordinates for the Canning in it.

One place we stopped and it said 5 metres to our right and there was the depression in the ground, we found all the wells.

In off road navigation it sets a line from the start point to the destination, damn nuisance when you are a k off that line and it goes off screen.

The hema GPS is the same as the paper map so ties together nicely, juts not ready to part with the cash.

I need plug and play, loading programmes etc is not for me LOL

We've had a Hema HN5i (5" screen version) for a few years now and can't fault it. Reliable, accurate on road and offroad mapping, fairly easy to use PC software, and we got 2yrs free mapping updates when purchased too. Marries up with Hema paper maps as expected. Would happily purchase another, so I guess I'm recommending the HN6 or HN7 now available.

I use Oziexplorer on both an Android 10" Tablet and PC. You need both, the PC version to plan your trips and create/edit track files and the Tablet version for in car. My poor old eyes have trouble reading the smaller screens (use to use the WinCE version on a 7" screen but got too hard to read without glasses). I use 1:25000 topo maps mostly, but have a large collection of maps picked up over the years.

Also run Sygic on the tablet for street by street navigation when not in the bush.

Even with the cost of software and maps I think this is a better and much cheaper option than HEMA's set up.

I run the Hema Maps on an iPad mini for general touring, but have always had a Garmin 62 handheld as backup and for more detail when zoomed in on Topos. This beaut old unit recently died though, so I am just about to start the process of finding a replacement.

I'd be interested also in what others are using when it comes to smaller hand-held GPS units, or ones that can me mounted to the dash on a suction cup etc.

I run Igo Primo for on road nav and have HEMA, HEMA explorer, Mud Maps 2 and a few others on my Ipad 2 and Iphone4.

I use Sygic or Navigon maps on my Galaxy S4 for on road nav as well. Don't use the S4 for any offroad mapping.

Reason for this setup is that I can switch between maps as I need to depending on where I am as they all have different tracks listed or not listed but always take out a paper map with me where ever I go wheeling just in case the Ipad fails.

get to most places just using paper maps.
I have a couple of GPS one is a VMS touring with Ozi-explore and memory maps
The other has Igo but thats the same as my VMS unit.
Did have a Garmin12 but that has reverted back to the Northern hemisphere lol.
I prefer paper maps

I'm also looking into a new GPS and would be interested if anybody has some feedback or thoughts or the HEMA explorer iPhone app?

One I cannot recommend is the model bought from Aldi. I am always persuaded by price ie cheap, around $60. It worked in Mungo NP, NSW and surrounds but managed to get us lost in the 'remote outback' of the Adelaide Hills. Personally I use paper maps and a hand held Garmin GPS which works fine.

I run Hema 4wd on my iPad and love it. Clear, accurate and easy to use. After exploring off road today, I inadvertantly converted my OziExplorer using mate. :-)
