Had the same problem in our Toyota van. After extensive searching, it turned out to be dried grease inside the steering column. It was sticking to the plastic wear pads and dropping them. It made a clicking tapping noise and droves us nuttier than we already are. I have just looked at the GQ steering column in the manual, but it doesn't seem to have the same set up. Maybe something to check out though.
