    diesel chips performance

Steinbaur is the only 1 worth looking at .Bought a STERLING chip $1300 4 my mazda 6 MZRCD DYNOED before and after very small increase no where near the touted increase on there web site. basically a con as it was supposed to be designed specifically 4 my engine.

    Hi.
    Regarding the D-Tronic.
'02 model 3 ltr ST. chipped from 10k with tuned exhaust added at 100k.
I tow(ed) a 6.5mtr Offroad caravan for 12 yrs with this rig.All over Aust. (Old. Fat, and retired)
    Without the chip YUK.....
With the chip. (and this is over the life of the car.) I pulled past all Std 80 and 100 ser Toyota's climbing hills, long and short.

At fuel stops (running together ) From Adel to Darwin and all stops in between.
The Toyota's ALWAYS used a fair bit more fuel than us. and I travelled Comfortably at posted road speeds (plus)
Overtaking multiple road train convoys etc. Best was 7 rigs at 140 plus on graded dirt rd. Missus driving.
She logged the GPS 173 kmph on it when near new too. Bloody leadfoot.

    Average consumption

with caravan. 6.2 to 6.5 KMPL combined weight av. 5.8\6 ton.
    Obviously booting it used more.
Car by itself. 8.7 to 10 KMPL depending on conditions. Hills. wind. etc.

Prev 17ft 6in Single axle semi offroad van.
I averaged 7.3 to 8 KMPL towing that. ALL at posted road speeds mainly.

We have a nice short STEEP hill here in Yeppoon. Just over the bridge going into town.
Straight up to the sky looking at it.
Car will go up it from a rolling start in third gear easily WITH chip.
Without. Just, as it rolls over the top in second.

With caravan. Does it comfortably in second.

That chip will puff a bit of black smoke on take off. Sometimes when well loaded.
    Otherwise clean pipe.

This is a well recommended chip (in my case) But according to some.
you sometimes have to try a couple b4 getting one that works?.

Everybody "I" know\met with one fitted, never has\had a problem from new. (shrug")

    I paid $1400ish fitted. Then.

    NON adjustable. reliable. bulletproof.

I don't ever bother about figures.
Just what happens in the real world. On the road. with my rig.
    Physical comparisons.

A chip alone you wont get the best out of your motor,
Combine it with a straight thru 2.75" Beaudesert exhaust or 3" with full flow Cat to really reap the benefits
I have DP chip on 7 and full 3" exhaust with 200k on the clock, I'm still getting 12/100Ks and plenty of power to over take
    Very happy camper

I think Diesel Smart have a complete re map service on offer for $1500 for 50% power increase,
Big call but ring for details I suppose

    Skits,

I have just ( 2 weeks ago) had a Unichip put in with a 3 tune predefined switch setup.

Unichip will work on boost control, rail pressure, monitor a multitude of parameters and is highly tuneable.

It cost me $1500 which included Dyno tuning.

The absolute only negative of a Unichip is that it has to be installed by a dealer, it is not a end user fitted device.

Having said that I did a 2400km round trip to get mine put in as this was the only chip I felt comfortable with.

I do not know if he posts on this forum, but if you shoot over to the Patrol4x4 forum there is a guy that goes by the name of DieselTuner, that has firstly written what equates to a textbook on diesel tuning and secondly has done a comprehensive comparison of a multitude of different chips. It is, I think, an unbiased description of the products with pros and cons.

I think they have it in their sticky section so it should not be hard to find. Read this first if you have time and then have a look out there.

For your info, I did have a ChipIt dominator 3, before I went with the Unichip so I have had some exposure to
    What's out there.

Whilst some may not agree with me, I seriously think that having the vehicle Dyno tuned is the way to go. By having before and after results gives you quantitative feedback as to what you really have rather than perceived.

    Kindest regards
    Rainsey

Oh ... Just read Threedogs response and cannot agree more.

Get a decent exhaust in first before you chip. Secondly, possibly an EGR block. A good exhaust gets the engine breathing a whole lot better and gives you some valuable KW's and torque.

If you do go with a chip that requires dynoing, you may well be better to have all the other bits that affect tuning done first.

    Skits,

There are pros and cons with all chips. They turn into a religious argument as to what is the best, and reality has it that there probably is not a "best" chip.

When I had my ChipIt, it was tuned by 2 jumper pins that modified the rail pressure and the boost, I think from input from the MAF.

I adjusted the jumpers the rail jumper until such time that my over pressure valve did not blow, and I adjusted the MAF jumper until the vehicle ran like crap then went back one setting. But what was I actually achieving?

Waiting for a valve to pop or the term running like crap are subjective and don't give you actual figures.

It's like a Placebo. You take a pill so you fell better. Has it really made a difference or is it just you thinking it has ( sort of Matrix like ).

Some chips modify the rail pressure, some modify the injector timing, some modify the turbo boost. Some do all 3.

Some do it by you tinkering with it yourself, whist some require professionals doing it with monitoring tools. Unfortunately the latter usually means no user intervention.

Some have plug and play harnesses and some are hard wired.

What you have to come to terms with is what you want to accept If self tuning and what risk you want to accept with its outcome. If you are a tinkerer and like to change things yourself... Go with a self install chip.

If you want something that is set and forget, and you want a definitive record of the result, go with a chip that is installed and tuned by the vendor.

Either way there are probably 4 or 5 chips on the market that have a very good reputation, have good customer service and have a proven record. Not going to tell you what to go with, as I said it is a religious argument. But just make sure you are sure in Your mind which way you want to go and what riskou are willing to accept.

    Kindest regards
    Rainsey
