It is 504 km from Mt Dare (last fuel) to Birdsville (first fuel) There is nothing between that resembles a supply of anything except sand!!!
Magazine article says around 180 litres for a full size 4x4
That 504 is using the French Line-basically a straight line and the shortest feasible route.
You wind up at Poepples Corner, turn north for 20K then east on the QAA line to Birdsville. You need a Queensland Parks permit for QAA-and they (Q.Parks) don't seem to now how to get the permit--they told me to call the local ranger!!!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

Giving the fuel usage some thought guys, we may decide to detour along a couple of the side tracks if the traffic is heavy and we want to mix it up a little. THere are a couple of Land Marks worth viewing. The link above indicates that Daulhousie to Birdsville is 438kms and as Dr Gary indicates the distance to Mt Dare should also be considered.

Mt Dare are recommending carrying 150lt of fuel and usage will be between 120 and 140lt for a diesel assuming a good safety margin. Plenty of folks quoting 95lt used though!. I will probably carry at least a jerry can on the roof which will then give me a total of 195lts which should be heaps.

    http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/...nsumption.aspx

Having a bit of a read around and most folks are averaging less than 19lt/100 and we all should do it easily. Taking a little extra each should allow us to do some diversions given we are in no hurry.

    Looking forward to it.

Here is another good write up and some excellent pics from when the TVan Owners Group "did the Simmo" in 2011.

Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

Is anyone choosing a double crossing--Birdsville to Mt Dare and back??
For Queenslanders that would save around 1,000 km. There is no easy way to get from Gold Coast to Mt Dare, and across the Simmo is the shortest. hmmm

Initially there was a large group from QLD that were going to do a double but they have all dropped off over time. I intended to do the double with them but due to lack of interest and other things I am now heading straight to Daulhousie and crossing West East only.

You are right your probably save 1000kms but not sure you'd save any time or fuel?? Birdsville to and oodnadatta are fast dirt roads.

There was a cheaper one but this is Aussie made etc.
bit the bullet and bought one last Thursday, arrived today, looks like it is a very good quality product with QA details documented. Very happy.
