And from memory they do have a function that the fan stays on after the ignition gets turned off to cool the motor down but it shouldn't stay on longer than a min or 2

Yeh, for sure it will be a variable speed computer controlled fan too, just to pee you off (lol)
G`day Pete
Wish you had posted yesterday as I had a meeting with a couple of guys today who may know a Audi mechanic.
Will try and contact them tomorrow and see if I can get you some help.

Starting to think George hit the nail on the head. Been to auto leccy, no idea, got it scanned today at cartoys, no idea. Spoke to several Audi repairers and tried there suggestions, no luck. Even runs with no relays in.
Only fella that sounded promising is booked solid for the next month.
3rd time lucky. Got it booked in tomorrow at another leccy recommended by the above. Specialises in euro makes. Fingers crossed as the miss's is gettin gnarly.

Can you actually see the cooling fan running?
The only reason I ask is my old neighbour had one and he had a similar problem with his but it wasn't the radiator fan that was staying on it was some sort of pump motor that was staying on instead.
In his cause it was a faulty relay.
