    Retreads, cheap fun or death?

Hey guys, I've just been on the hunt for some cheap muddies to get out and about, I wouldn't normally even consider running retreads but since cash is running a little bit thin lately with other repairs I am doing I found a set on eBay and wondering if it is even worth the hassle of getting a set of retreads?

A lot of people have had success and I have heard some shocker stories too.

It will always be on your mind too so if money permits or even save up mate and do it properly in my opinion.

I've used "re-moulded" Mongrels cause they were cheap, all de-laminated so ended up costing me more.
if you cant afford to run 2 sets there are some great all terrains out there ATM

Try the facbook swap/sell pages they are always selling off tyres and rims for some times decent prices.
I wouldnt trust re-treads personally as my family is precious cargo last thing I want is a blow out and some one getting injured.

I run a decent set of A/T and they get me everywhere my mates go who all have muddies

The way retreads are done hasn't altered much over time. You basically will have either a "hot cap" or a "cold cap" retread.
Another is a re-mold (this is still a retread but is done from bead to bead, not just "capped)
Most tyre manufacturers do not recommend retreading their cases.

Most common cause of retread failure is the old case fails, then the tread follows suite. ( its hard to know what sort of life the case has had in its previous life).
Also the material used is not like a new tyre, apart from handling and braking issues, there is the mileage factor. Retreads will often only give you half the mileage compared to a new tyre.
I would prefer a 2nd hand tyre than a retread.

I see the op is in Darwin. I know what you are up against. Tyre sellers that won't budge below $495 each for Bfg muddies.

Delamination is serious. I'm sure someone has a good story here about the damage it can cause. Retreads are high candidates for Delamination in the top end.

Me personally, I went for summit mud hog. 1350 delivered for 5. (freight $250). Almost half price for 5x Bfg muddies at 495 ea. Of course time will tell whether these are any good up here.

    Murrumbeena competition tyres in Melbourne.

Found via ebay, but ring them direct.

This is not a recommendation - as I haven't received them yet. I beat them back a bit on the freight, as I rang a company with a depot in town, and they gave me a better price, and the tyre company matched it.

Even better if you have a mate coming up from Melbourne.
