Don't have the head yet but made progress anyway. Removed the old valves and springs so I could re use the valve springs on the new head.

Valve gear and rocker assembly removed

The rocker assembly felt a bit graunchy when moving the arms so I pulled it all apart, gave it all a clean and gave the bores and friction surfaces a light sand with 600grit. Nice and smooth now.

And the block all cleaned up. Used a scourer pad in the bores and removed most of the lines caused by the rings. I can barely feel the ridge now. It's got to be no more than a thou or two.

Did you order new head bolts.... I snapped one in the head re using old bolts... they are torque to yield so should not be used again.

I am speaking from experience as I tried to use old ones and paid the price.

    New head and gear arrived.

I noticed that the water passages in the head gasket are very small and actually blocked in some cases on some of the cylinders. This was also the case with the gasket that was previously installed on the engine. Any risk in drilling out these holes and filing the holes so they actually match the head/block profile?

Grab a dermal and thin cutter.
Main aim is to keep all edges smooth and round.
So grab a course cutter and a fine one..
And go nuts opening them up a little.
I'd recommend no closer to the bore, but can go out a little
    Cheers
