Funny you say that.
A lot of people think that when you let the tyres down, you are making it wider using the sidewall.
Fact is that you are increasing the length of tread in contact with the ground (a bit like tracks on an excavator).
Skinny tyres with tall sidewalls are good for 'cutting' through the soft top layers to get to firmer ground underneath.
Just some of the useless info I have floating around in my head.
