If your worried about fuel consumption than 285s are a good compromise. Still a little bigger than standard. If you want a good all terrain than something like bfg all terrains are ok. Also done some looking around myself and nitto terrain tamer look very nice.

How long is a piece of string mate? I guess you'd expect 40-50k kms out of them if you maintained them... read: frequent wheel alignments, balances and roatations every 5k.
So far I've done over 5k and there is no excessive wear on them, I was in the same boat as you when I was shopping for tyres, Funds were tight, so to me to buy kumho which is a fairly decent brand and not a generic no name one I haven't heard of, I was very happy with.

I recently drove a cruiser with some pretty decent Wranglers on it but cant recall exact type went well through sand gravel and on road with not too much noise. fairly aggressive tread but seemed to balance off and on road pretty well .. just a thought
I haven't seen many muddys or wide tires on 4wd in the outback, at least not with the locals. I got my car with skinny 235/85/16 Hercules Terra Trac and that has been a top tire. Not many uses them but a lot of people remembers them as a really good tire. Skinny tires with a lot of side wall makes them really good when you deflate them
Funny you say that.
A lot of people think that when you let the tyres down, you are making it wider using the sidewall.
Fact is that you are increasing the length of tread in contact with the ground (a bit like tracks on an excavator).
Skinny tyres with tall sidewalls are good for 'cutting' through the soft top layers to get to firmer ground underneath.
Just some of the useless info I have floating around in my head.

What do you think about COOPER STT (All season - MT)? I already bought them and have about 7k of mixed on/off-road (about 50-50); they look fine. No excessive wear and no cuts (yet).
Anyone here having more experience with them?

Yeah Stretch had done over 100k kms on his. Rotated every 5k.
Mostly Tarmac driving. Plenty of freeway stuff.
Has now gone to an A/T by Dick Cepek FC-II.
