We now use an MDC camper trailer (well, after I pick it up in three weeks time!) but before that my wife and I slept on an air mattress with an eggshell foam overlay that lay over everything in the trailer before tying it all down. Very comfortable night sleep. Kids now sleep on the Oztrail King single stretchers. Best thing we ever bought them.
Not sure if you could fit something like that in the back of your wagon though.
Looks like your up for a new air mattress mate.
