    Weird Oil Leak

Today I noticed a patch appearing under the diff. I'm still out remote so was a bit worried to say the least.

Crawling under and casting my non mechanical eye it appears to be oil.

Dip stick fine. Water fine. Brake and clutch fine. Didnt hit anything on way in.

So I called my mechanic and he said prob the oil filter trap breather or something. Have any if you heard of this?

Both filters changed a couple of weeks ago?

Patch on concrete about the size of a dinner plate.

    Cheers

    Marty.

Hi. It was the front diff. Further looking this morning shows its coming from the injector pump area. Is diesel. And still dripping slowly with the engine being off for nearly a day and a half. Starts ok though. Can't see exactly where it's coming from though

Your mechanic was probably saying that he didn't clean your oil catch tray before he gave it back to you . Underneath your oil filter housing there is a tray when you change your filter you let the excess oil pour into this tray at the bottom there is a hose that you place a container underneath. This hose is next to your front diff passenger side. If you don't clean tray the oil will drip like it is a leak. If you lift bonnet and look down underneath filter the filter has an aluminium housing with a socket bar cut out . you will see the tray have a feel around and clean it is hard to get to. Hope this is it Alf Ps could also be that the filter housing has slight leak the seal could be faulty after cleaning tray check again maybe after a couple of days .

Are you referring to the 3 litre motor? My 4.2 doesn't have the tray you have mentioned.

Well after the trek back on 200km of track then bitumen for the last 250 I parked at home and the diesel leak has stopped. So I am supposed to take it to my mechanic in the morning and try and explain what happened while its not doing it now! Ah well off out bush again Tuesday and have to cross Cahill's Crossing NT (you tube it for a look) so hopefully the troll will be right to go again.

    Still loving it.

    Pics from last week.

    Cuppa,
    re your question,
must be a 3.0 . The 4.2 had 2 filters on the off side, well my wagon did, but the 3.0 has one on the near side with the drip tray beneath as Alfi says. The drip tray is good as long as you clean it before installing the new filter.
When Rafa said it was diesel though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    Cheers

    Cuppa,
belatedly I had a look at Rafa's profile.
It's a 4.2 so the oil catch tray dripping was a red herring,
