Just to clarify - the rolled up newspaper/magazine is used to stop the two straps binding on each other and getting stuck together.
If you ever try it without the paper - you will find that the two straps almost become welded.
I've done it and in the end we had to cut the oldest strap away from the newest to salvage the new strap. Old one was destroyed
