Hi Mike,
TD42 wont help with your brake problems ( might a little as you will be a smidgen slower ), but definitely better for heavy duty towing.
I have towed 2.5 tonne with the 3L a couple of times, and it towed well, but the old tech 4.2 is better suited for long term towing in my opinion.
