There's a reason why the free ones are free..............ponder this question for a moment.... would you purchase a Tigerz11 product, if not why not?
Same goes with using free antivirus programs
What you tapin at!!!!!????

Care to explain the reason.
My understanding is when you get a free anti virus it is just that, ant virus, Trojan and worm protection.
Then you have a paid version which will often have web protection, cloud protection, kid content protection and then you have premium services where you get email phishing protection, pc booster, file encrypter and all the other junk.
So the basic antivirus is identical to the paid versions without the junk you don't want.
Has worked for me for years anyway.
.........on the move

Hey Clunk - I get what you are saying but have to agree with Nisshead on this - AVG is a rock-solid A/V without the bells and whistles. Think of it like Tigerz giving away a good quality basic product but then selling a premium version (ok - not the best analogy - but you know what I mean). What the software vendors do is entice you in with a basic, working, quality product but then you want this feature or that feature. The main thing with A/V is that your virus definition files are updated as soon as new threats/exploits/viruses are identified. The difference between the good vendors of A/V is just that - and the difference can be minutes.....

Food for thought, i operate a computer everyday at home and i do not have an anti virus installed. anti virus is peace of mind for people who are unsure of what they are up to on computers IMHO. I've never had a virus on my computer and when I did it was completely my fault. At the end of the day viruses are completely avoidable and can't get onto your computer without your say so. As I said before, AVG is a great free program and its the one i would recommend but It's not absolutely nessecary to have. Most times the best security on your computer is to have a simple password and taking time to read what you are clicking on if you are unsure of what it is.
Cheers

Hi Nic - that's a pretty dangerous way to operate in my opinion. You must be very cautious in what you view - for example - it would be quite trivial for me to plant some malicious code in a picture on this very forum and when you view it causing your computer to do anything ranging from deleting all your data, planting a trojan which emails spam, etc.....
You don't just need to click on links or reply to man-in-the-middle style exploits.... There are several ways you can get a virus or be compromised. Not saying it doesn't work for you mate - but I think it is pretty dangerous to not have some form of AV - unless you run a Mac (as I do - and no I don't have AV software installed!).

I guess your right, most sites I visit are regarded as safe, but when I do stray from the path I have never had a problem, like I said its not for everyone but it suits me. At the end of the day a virus needs to me executed to do its thing, as long as I don't execute those files there is no problem, I've been doing it for several years and haven't had a problem. There are viruses for mac, but the reason the majority of viruses don't affect mac users is cos they are written for windows based environments, not "cos it's mac she'll b right". I'm not trying to offend by saying this jas but to say I am taking a big risk by not having AV and for you to say you don't need it cos you have a mac is pretty hypocritical.

Hey mate - that was tongue in cheek...And you're right on a virus needing to be executed - however the simple act of clicking on an image can cause a virus to be installed. I guess my point is I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though.

I believe the P4x4 site got malware through a picture which caused hundreds of infections.
The reason I use AV plus other security is I disclose lots of personal info over the internet and I would rather be safe then sorry. And it being free is a bonus![]()
