I have the rb30 3l, and I've read that people do the VL turbo conversion on them, But to me that just sounds like a patrol rice burner on the road and just crap offroad

Depends what you want. If economy in petrol rb30 diesel rd28. If power tb4.2 if reliability td4.2. If you want a bit of both rb 30 injected with turbo. Horses for courses. My choice id go td4.2 as I prefer diesel in my 4wd

Td42 turbo more reliable than other engines and more power aswell with a good tune.

TD42- reliable, efficient, VERY expensive to replace
TB42- reliable, thirsty, cheap to replace
RB30- reliable, Not quite as thirsty but not exactly efficient, cheap to replace
RD28- not reliable, not as cheap to run as you might hope, not cheap to replace
Also not all gearboxes are equal. Some are lighter, weaker boxes I hear...

Add them up and decide how many km per year you are driving. It might just be cheaper to drive a thisty old petrol in the long run...Thats the conclusion I came to when I bought my TB42.

A TB42 on gas is cheaper to run than a Td42 but you don't get the long range... Filling up every 400km is a PITA
