    For the history buffs...

The year was 1962. The vast sands of the Simpson Desert at this stage had never been crossed by a motor vehicle. Enter geologist Reg Sprigg, his family and their G60 Nissan Patrol. Setting off east from Mount Daer, 11 km north of the South Australian border, Reg Sprigg began a geological expedition that would take him across the unrelenting desert, all the way to Birdsville in outback Queensland.

It should be said that to complete this journey, Reg would have to travel over a sea of never-ending sand dunes; sand dunes that ranged from 3 m in height right through to the 40 m-high mother of all sand dunes, Big Red. Reg made it, parking the G60 Nissan Patrol and of course himself in the history books.

The Nissan Patrol G60 had become the first vehicle in history to cross the Simpson. Reg and his G60 had not only changed 4x4 history but had also opened people’s eyes, the world over, to the amazing capabilities of the Patrol. This momentous occasion would go on to become one of the greatest ever milestones in the Nissan Patrol story.
