    4.2 Petrol ?

I am thinking about buying a Patrol with 4.2 Petrol engine and a auto. Is there some issues in this engine that i should know about? And also how is the gas mileage?

    Gas mileage sucks.
Auto's have issues with overdrive or slipping when left over night cold.
    They have headgasket failures.
Have the above thoroughly tested before purchasing and they can be a good reliable thing with regular maintenance and servicing they have been known to do more then half a million k's.

My cousin's manual TB42S did 600,000ks before he sold it a couple of months ago and the only engine work it had done was a new head, they are prone to failure at around 250,000ks and costs a couple of grand.
Gas mileage isn't great, I get 21L/100kms from mine.

Just recently purchased a TB42s mate and have been told some things to be wary of are head gaskets blowing or heads cracking (knock on wood), this is very often because people never adjust their tappets so the tolerances get out of whack and allow hot gases to stay in the head thus causing the head to say bye bye. Another thing to be aware of is the steering box at around 200-300 thou, they get sloppy and there tends to be a lot of play in the steering at 100k's. The auto trans is apparently 3-4k to rebuild, it's a complicated piece of gear and as a result can cost a kings ransom to fix.

Try this blokes website particularly the 'Buying a GQ' section. Very helpful

Expensive to run, yes 20-25 L/100 Ks is about the norm
Head failure/head gasket issues , no better or worse than any other alloy headed engine
People dont use the correct coolant or if any and this can cause issues
The radiators get blocked , with in proper use and age and can cause them to overheat, again no different to any other unserviced or maintained rig
Buy the absolute best of the best you can find or afford
I spent well over 6 months looking for my TB42 auto, ill jump in it and drive round australia tomorrow

I have a TB42 5 speed dual fuel patrol. It has extractors and I recently fitted a 350 Holley to it, it is by far the best 4WD i've ever owned. Personally, I wouldn't go for an auto but that is just personal preference, however its a very torquey lazy motor, mine doesn't rev over 3000 rpm under normal driving, so unless the auto's are very strong, I imagine they'd be prone to failure, with the stresses put on them, at least a clutch can slip.

My truck has about 500,000 on it, I'd say its had a freshen up once in its life because its pretty lively and isn't smokey. I wouldn't have any hesitation firing it up and driving it anywhere I needed to go.

The autos are tough as nails. They may fatigue after a long time like any other part. A standard TB42 auto fitted with a Nomad heavy duty valvebody is strong enough to take more than three times the power of the standard engine. They are used extensively in 4wd racing applications such as the outback challenge, winch challenge etc, and can be found behind all sorts performance engines.
