Hello all i have a 1998 gu 2.8 td intercooled patrol
Last week it dropped power then started to run realy rough and blow lots of white smoke.
I have replaced the glow plugs and serviced the injectors
but still the same
its extreamly hard to start and runs rough with lots of white smoke even after its up to running temp??
I also am trying to get a manual on this but they say i cant downlaod till i get 25 posts but i dont want to fill the forum up with crap can any one help with this also please
White smoke tends to be a sign of unburnt atomised fuel. If everthing else in check you may have some more serious dramas do you know if the head has ever been off?
Do a compression test on it and see what she is at. It does sound like an internal issue and a compression check should point you in the right direction. Also has the fuel pump had any work that you know of?
the fuel pump is also untouched
i am buying a compression tester in the morning do you know what comression i should get?
And for the pump is there any tests i can do to see if its ok or not?
440psi new prob wouldnt want them to much lower than 380 or so and no more than 70psi difference across all 6 cylinders. Make sure the compression tester has an adaptor for your glow plugs and disconnect your fuel cutoff solenoid. Not much you can with your pump othe than check timing. It may also be your advance plate have heard of other 2.8 owners having trouble with this hopefully someone will be able to comment on this.
There are a couple of sensors which could also be causing problems. Crank position sensor, or I have heard of another sensor on one of the injectors (No. 1 I think). My Patrol has played up like you describe after water crossings, and I've always put it down to a wet sensor. Mine doesn't last long, and clears itself fairly quickly.

Yeah not sure on the 2.8's but are normally on the backside of the injector pump and willl have a plug. Disconnect and crank motor with compression tester fitted (easier with 2 people)
