    GU air box gasket

I was working under the bonnet of the GU on the weekend and I noticed a noise from the air box when I started the engine. After removing the lid of the air box I noticed that the gasket around the perimeter of the lid was totally perished and most of it was missing. I went to the local Nissan dealer to get a new one and he said it was not listed - I would have to buy a new lid. I did not even bother to ask for a price (he may have had to call an ambulance!) - and went straight to Rare Spares who had replacement rubber off the roll for $2.00 for a metre.

Good thing to check on your Patrol because if you have a snorkel and think you are safe to do a river crossing - the water will certainly get into the air box via the defective seal.

Its a cheap repair at $2.00.

Would be VERY common. The rubber ages over time, hardens/dries out and falls to bits. I suggest we all check our seals. Its easy to do. Just undo the clips holding the top on the air filter - undo the MAF sensor plug - loosen the clamp and remove the top - look under the lid and you will see the seal located in a square groove. If the seal is hard and brittle - it's knackered and needs to be replaced NOW. Simple and may save you an engine replacement.

After replacing mine, I did a seal test and found air still getting in somewhere. It took 6 months but I discovered air was still finding a way through the seal on the lid. I ended up using blue air sensor safe silicone and sealed it up that way.

Since then I've replaced the entire airbox with a high flow stainless steel unit from PatrolDocta. It has a simple rubber ring that does not leak, she also breathes a LOT better.
