Swivel bearing seals and shims. DA-Maverick, MQ, MK, and guess GQ also.
Noticed Questions about this job and thought Id share what I've learnt.
These rubber coated swivel disc seals are $40 each from nissan.
dont damage them ,but that's harder than it sounds, near impossible I recon.
Idea hit me when replacing mine.
had some 2mm stainless steel sheet.
made some new discs and silicone them in place, EASY, problem solved.
they sit inside a recess and can't fall out once swivel bearings are in position any way.
Disc need to fit recess and not to thick that it would not interfere with bearing being fully seated.
Silicon help ensure grease stays in and water out of housing .
And holds underside disc in place while you replace bearing.
Old MK had grease nipple for these swivels, top only I think from memory, omitted on gq update.
Swivel Shims are $40 a packet of 10ea.
that is, 10 ea same size per packet.
4 thicknesses are available, info in gen manuals
Shim numbers are as follows.
0.075mm 40606-44000.
0.125mm 40605-44000.
0.254mm 40604-44000.
0.762mm 40603-44000.
the shims you currently have may do the job, but doubt it .
May pay to get the 3 thinner sizes as a back up.
It all depends on what you have, and something I can't help you with from here if ya follow.
This sizing idea is a gamble but who wants to be stuck waiting on parts.
and the money you save on labour kills this outlay by miles anyway.
TIP- MQ,MK and Da Mav uses the same shims.
Have both gen manuals and have done this job on both series.
That is 1985 MK an 1993 Da Maverick.
I personally have all shims sizes, this info is correct.
You will need a weight scale to test pre-load.
I bought fishing scales from Rays but were no good, out by way to much, to do the job.
have some very accurate scales at work so I compared rays one first to a known weight with works scales "so it pays to double check things".
local tackle "Budgewoi B&T" had some you can zero.
compared these again and I could zero them, so perfect.
adjustment is via thumb screw on top in pic.
The aftermarket kit I bought supplied axle needle bearing, but it had shorter needles than gen 1 so I did not use it.
Reason axle sits on this needles for extended periods, "unused not turning".
Shorter needles = reduced support and higher pressure to area being supported, and less support= more damage.
Axle could end up with bearing seating them-selves alittle into the axle , result axle is damaged.
I did use gen needles for this reason to be safe, a broken axle is just not worth the pain.
Nissan p/No ------- 40588-C600.
nissan supply a KOYO bearing.
Koyo bearing------- BTM3516.
Ebay --------------- HK3516.
Needle count 28 ea.
Now the needles koyo 12mm long.
And ebay are---------- 10mm.
Doesn't sound much, but X 28 needles.
= 56 mm support difference.
Tip- putting needle in is to put it in the freezer for a while, presses in easier.
The list of tools for this job is big so I'll not list it up.
A good set of tools will do, hay.
But recommend a micrometre for shims, compressor, dust blower, greasing cone (pic with scales) and a good work area for 4x4 undercover and work bench.
As for doing the job follow gen manual instructions.
Think that covers it, no doubt I missed something.
pic of newly greased bearing is just to show how easy/well that little $20 king-chrome tool works.
Cheers
