How do the MQ/MK SD33 engines stack up against the GQ TD42, turbo and non turbos
The sd33 are a tough engine. I have one in a swb mq. Obviously not as much torque as the bigger TD42. Most (maybe all, correct me if I'm wrong) sd33's are 24 volt which can be a pain. They are a cheaper engine with cheaper parts because of their age.
Have you given up on the GQ Ute you were looking at?

Hello from Under Down Under!
No no haven't given up on it just waiting for the pics of the rust and the guys currently in WA so he's trying to arrange someone to do that for him.
From what i can gather though it's the sill below the doors and the doors them self are fine.
I wonder if that panel can just be removed or replaced?
Maybe the answer will come up in here

The MQ SD33 are 24Volt and n/a, the MK SD33 are 12volt either n/a or turbo
SD33 are a great motor and well like most old commercial or industrial built things are as tuff as an ox
They fitted these engines in forklifts and UD diesel trucks
But, like most things with some age on them , they can be great and last forever or they could fall apart in a headbeat
Theres blokes pumping well over 15 PSI safely in a SD33 with many Ks on it , some are even as game as pumping near 20 PSI in them
They are getting harder to find parts for, usually resulting in purchasing a complete car instead(ya shed full of parts)
Theres a bloke on another patrol forum who has dyno printout of his SD33T, daily driver putting out 400NM at the wheels, not shabby in any language
Youll pay more for a TD42 n/a , than the best SD33T you can find
Both great

always seem to be exceptions to the rules when it comes to patrols. my SD33T on an 86 Safari hightop LWB is 24 volt. I agree fully about how tuff the SD's are, one of the main reasons i bought it. love machines that were built to last, instead of made to empty someones wallet.
There is hardly any difference in hp between the sd33t and the TD42 NA (only 4kw difference) sd33t - 80.9kw @ 4000rpm TD42 - 85kw @ 4000rpm.
I drive both as my son has a TD42 Maverick. My old MK runs rings round the GQ/Mav when climbing and towing and uses a heap less fuel to boot.
I am seriously thinking of getting another MK (yep I must be crazy as my son says, but hey I luv em)
Cheers Ric
