it's always a dangerous thing cos it usually costs me money. Just throwing it out there, anyone nuts enough to do it or know of some one who has?

You can follow me but its gunna hurt !
I had one years ago in an mq shorty it had a cam aftermarket manifold etc it was ok i guess nothing to rave about.
I only bought it because it was $450 and was full of rust.
big increases in torque can end up with either a gear box full of first gears, or new diff centres or bigger tyres - all of which can be fun.
I'd want to be confident that accessability and heat issues were planned for before going down that path. And you'll have to get to love a dissie at the back of the engine :-). (unless they have put it at the front in the intervening 30 years :-) )
My Dad went through all those dramas with a 350 into a Cruiser years ago. Ended up being reasonably nice, and had a lovely exhaust note, it was possible to imagine $2 coins were dropping out of the exhausts as those vacuum secondaries opened up :-)

I'm inclined to think that a V8 in a Patrol is a good thing, go for it I say.

What si2e/performance is an interesting question. When I had the MQ with the mighty L28 and a suitable exhaust I came to like the note, but I still miss that old Clevo rumble and bark.
And just today the neighbour was loading up his Monaro drag car for a trip to Willowbank, now that makes a beautiful sound - although if I heard it every morning I would have a different view!
The downside is fixing up all the niggles like overheating and access issues etc. I guess these days you need a replacement engine with the right emission standards as well - not a problem when the Old Man did his Chevie transplant.

Heres one a mate had.....
YES I KNOW ITS NOT A PATROL!
Brumby ute, 40 series toyo chasis and transfer, 351 Clevo rear mounted, and auto box of some sort.
Would nearly wheel stand.
No flex to speak of, pretty much a mudrunner only.

just put a 308 into short wheel base auto and it is very nice. It will be even better when i sort the converter lock up as ive lost a few sensors. Its got nice power delivery and sounds sweet!
I was thinking about getting a toy like that until Ynot convinced me that turbo deisels can produce some great torque and a very nice note with the right combos under the hood.
