Brush/scrub bars on GU???

Gday all,

So we are still waiting on our scrub bars from OL and just thought Id ask what people think of them.. What do you use them for are you happy with them???

We had a set on our hilux years ago and found them to be of good use.. The bloke at OL said that they are good and bad in the case that they can some times course more damage from a simple bend in them..

Also dose anyone have a few pics of there GU with side step and scrub bars as I haven't decided whether I like the look of them or not lol

Depends on lots of things, great for bouncing off roos, sheilding off boulders and trees but I saw some damage up at Cape York that made me think twice. Depends how extreme you plan to go with your adventures. If they are easily removed then you have the best of both options.

They are a winner mate, they look neat and do a great job.

I dont have a set on my GU but certainly have seen them on others and they are very tidy.

They are on my list and would consider them if i upgraded my front bar to an ARB Bar and Brush Bar combo. Do the OP ones include a side step too?

If they are a step also then you now have a set of rock sliders too. Winner.

As for ol' mate saying that they can do more damage from a bend????? Ummm? Really? You will find you can lean the weight of your car on a tree with these things. IF they ever bend you will be pleased you had them and you quarter panel may need replacing but that will be the least of your worries. So will you front bar and side bar and grill and radiator support and probably you front door and hopefully not your family. Who cares mate, if you bend it it took a big hit and your insurance will sort out the rest.

Be happy when they are bolted up. I Know they will save far far more damage than they will create

Here are a couple of pics of mine. Have lots of scratches and nicks that would otherwise have ended up on the guards and flares. Also deter idiots in the traffic from getting too close or cutting me off

Well well, at KI last year playin in a mud pit on the mates property sliding between trees like a rally car and bam, where the hell did that tree come from, branch snapped off and smashed windscreen lol I love insurance, replaced for free but the dent still remains,not paying excess unless it's needed, If I had scrub bars that damn dent would not be there, and it's the only dent I have on the troll. All good though, there will be more because I don't have scrub bars. Well worth getting buddy and they look OK to me.

I did some of my own research into brush bars before deciding on getting just sliders.

I know exactly what ole mate is on about, they "are" fantastic for rubbing trees/rocks etc...... the problem is created by the side steps that these bars always seem to be attached to (all the ones ive seen)



The side steps or horizontal bars, are heaps stronger than any factory alloy step, but most are just NOT a slider, sure they look strong from the top/outside, but have a look underneath, the mounts and overall strength are just not designed for the same punishment as a proper slider.

The odd scrape and rub over a rock is no problem, but what i have seen with my own eyes, is the car straddles a rock, coming down a little too hard in the area under the front door, this impact bends the horizontal side step/bar upwards, the side step pivots or bends, (sometimes just on its own mounts), the step bends up towards the sill (even a real slider will still flex a little on a big impact, but they wont bend)



This upward movement of the side step, is exaggerated by the height of the vertical brush bar, and so pushes the curve section of the brush bar (other end fixed/pivoted off the bullbar) inward straight into the gaurd with huge force (the whole weight of the car pushing on it)

The damage is much much more to the cars panels than if no brush bar was present, and then the whole lot can stop you from opening the door properly to get in or out, and because of the brush bar, its normally to hard/strong to easily bend it back to be able to use the door for the remainder of the trip.





So i guess if you hit your gaurds on stuff often, brush bars are great, but if you hit the underneath of your car more, perhaps leave the brush bars off , or make sure they are attached to sliders that wont bend.

Thanks for that write up 04off you made some very interesting points.. Ill be getting them put on tomorrow and will see how we go LOL We are off to LMP Friday so fingers crossed for no major damage

here's mine had a set on my lux gave them a good work out they saved me heaps $$$ haven't fully tryed them on the trol yet but
