@ growler why don't you drill and tap the tang on your Bowie knife, grab a bag of redgum firewood from Bunnings.
Frow\m all the pieces of wood look for one with a dense wavey grain, cut to suit your tang, sand then buff should come out like pic

You just got me thinking! Ive got some old salvaged jarra floor boards that'll do the trick nicely
