Momentum is definitely key but there is also another factor to consider and that is static grip.
In laymans terms a static object has higher ground friction than the same object once slidding.
This comes into play once wheels start spinning, you will actually have less grip in order to move forward.
If you feel the wheels starting to spin, back off the accelerator in order to regain static grip then carefully re- apply power. All while keeping momentum going.
If you get it right you will be a star in the mud and generally out drive most others running a similar tyre to you.
In really slippery conditions you will end up feathering the accelerator pedal.
