'02 ZD30 auto, starts mucking up! First warning, ignition on, lots of relays go click 'n clunk (normal!), but no instruments/warning lights! No starter motor engaging! Call RACV, after having done lots of fault finding, myself. RACV man looks and does everything I just did. By fluke, car starts. He did not know what he did. "We have an intermittent gremlin!"
So off I drive. The gremlin re-appeared. Same modus operandi: no start. Then I tapped the 3 relays on top of the internal fuse box. Turns out these relays control ignition, air-con, and accessories. AND all 3 relays are the same. So next time the gremlin popped up. I changed/swapped all the relays around. Hey presto: it starts!
Got a quote for 1 relay from local; Nissan dealer $133. Went to auto-elec store. Same relay $6.50! It a fairly universal high-current after-market automotive relay.
My tip. Keep 1 in your spares. Just in case your car, air or accessories stop!
