    Question turbo water cooled?

how hard is it to fit a water cooled turbo to an engine that's only ever had an oil cooled one.?
also will a leaking intercooler result in a fried turbo?

The water cooled problem is easy, you just have to find the water outlets from the block and/ or heater hoses the factory water cooled units use.

Fried turbo is a hard one, what do you mean by fried?? Blowing heaps of smoke coz the seals are shot?? Noisy bearing from oil starvation ?? Broken fins ??

G'day, It's leaking black stuff, looks like exhaust, between the air and exhaust chambers, but could it be oil vapour?
wistles like a canary, sounds blowy, and only gets 4psi, previosly was only getting 9psi so I think there was a leak in the intercooler, also the factory boost sensor doesn't seem to be working.
after about 3rd gear and 2500 rpm it gets a bearing noise.
have just bought Boost and MAF sensors and a vacuum solenoid, as I reckon theres somthing wrong with the regulation.

The middle section is cast iron, on top is the oil feed and the bottom is the oil drain most likely the feed is leaking but thats going by what your saying. When it cools down degrease and wash it clean and let it idle up to see where it is leaking from.

Its hard to gauge what your boost problem is without seeing and hearing it and it could possibly be leaking out somewhere thru the system like the intercooler or hoses.

See how you go with those censors for now then get back to us with your results

    Question

A thought just crossed my mind, I was convinced that using a water cooled turbo would be the way to go, but now I'm indecisive as the question has come up as to this perhaps unnecesarily increasing the water temp and cuasing issues elswere, so my real Q now is; Wich is actualy better oil cooled only or oil and water cooled?
    oppinions please.

Oil and water cooled are a lot better and you shouldn't have any issues if your cooling system is intact mate.

Take the hose off the turbo and get your fingers in there and give the fins a spin. If it feels smooth atleast you know the bearings are o.k. As Alitis said. Give a it clean and inspect.
I wouldn't be worrying about what type of turbo is better until you find the issue at hand. Sounds to me a boost leak but not being at the car who knows.
What engine are we talking about anyway?

Water cooling a turbo on a diesel isn't a necessity. They don't get anywhere near as hot than if fitted to a petrol. I wouldn't worry to much about the "extra load" it may put on the cooling system, a water cooled turbo doesn't require to much water to go through it.

When was its last service? And when was the air filter changed last.

Its unlikely the turbo has carked it, but anything is possible. If its run out of oil, yes, or something has blocked the intake and broken the fins, yeah. But I would be looking elsewhere first. Check every hose for cracks. Remove them and check them. Check the IC for leaks. If it's leaking you will see oil deposits on the core.
Like I mentioned. find this issue and get it fixed before you even need to worry about a water cooled turbo.
Plus what NN said too about the servicing and filter changes...
