Five people are have been killed after a four-wheel-drive and a semi-trailer have reportedly collided head-on the Bruce Hwy on Sunday afternoon at Pig Creek, south of Childers, at around 3.40pm.
Police reported five people were killed in the four-wheel drive and the driver of the truck had suffered minor injuries.
Several police units were rushed to the scene.
A Bundaberg Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said their Childers first response fire and rescue truck with the jaws of life was the first on the scene at around 4.10pm.
"Maryborough also sent a first response unit," the spokesman said.
"We sent a heavy rescue truck from Bundaberg, which is for any accident involving a heavy vehicle.
"Whenever a truck is involved we send a heavy rescue truck."
Police have confirmed the closure of the highway in both directions on Sunday afternoon and are warning motorists to expect lengthy delays.

Sadly there have been several fatalaties on the highway Nth of Brisbane in the very recent past.
Big chunks of the road are boring, running through pine plantations. Given the distances, fatigue must play a part. There is also single carriage way most of the way once past Gympie or a bit further North.
All things that drivers should take into account and adjust for..... it is the main Nth Highway, however, and could do with further upgrades.
