Just got back from fraser today after a great week away and really love the simpliciety of the old school 4.2 td . the altanator died yesterday lucky had a couple of fully charged batteries in the camper , and was able to get from happy valley to brisbane easily , the gauges started to die just as we pulled ito the driveway and had to hook up to the another battery to get the windows up , just love a rig that does not need all the electronics to keep on going

Ive had a common rail hitech in a 4B plus our two work vans have that motor. They perform really well and are not thirsty.
But the EDU failed on the 4B and left us stranded in the bush, a big tow to a road then a trailer 3 hours to home. It took mechanics 3 days to fix as "this has never happened before"
(Electronic Distribution Unit, it fires the injectors)
Got rid of that vehicle and bought the Patrol, it has some electrics on the fuel pump but thats all, and it has not been to the mechanics as a result of a trip not like the other "unbreakable" vehicle.
Simplicity is best even if it does use a lot more fuel.
When Brad Newham had the servo in Birdsville 99% of desert rescues were computer related, but properly serviced a hi tech 4x4 is a thing of beauty to drive IMO

Talking to a fella the other day he gets average 18L/100Ks in his falcon wagon towing a little van,bout 1 1.5 T
I get around 25 L/100Ks give or take towing over 2 tonne in the GQ
7L difference is alot, but im pulling more weight in a heavier car, thats not stremlined
We average 10L/100Ks on highway run in the ol MQ SD33 4 speed wagon,not bad for a tank that had half a million Ks on the engine
Fellas are getting between 12-14 L/100Ks in boosted ,cooled SD33Ts in MQ/MKs
The older car figures above arent too far of what people get in the new breed
Actually the landscaper in town has a newish petrol V6 rodeo,it gets fuel consumption on par with our GQ
I know some of you don't like the Rb30, but it has never failed to get me home. I may have had to free up the second stage of the carby in the early months of ownership, but it still ran. My told trol has luxuries, like, air con, central locking and p/steering. Non of these should stop the vehicle if they fail. The Keep It Simple Stupid principle works for me. I'm spewing that newer vehicles are so complicated.

I got no petrol running at the moment.. ive had the fuel pump out and it has no power to it. Checked all the fuses i can find theyre all good.
So im assuming that its the fuel stop soliniod cutting the power to the pump.
Only thing is i dont know where it is.....
And the other thing is i get very bad fuel economy, you mentioned you did carby work. Did it improve fuel consumption?
Im not blowing any smoke at all so im pretty sure all the fuel is being burnt

this was the first time on the island with the patrol , we had a 2.7 lux previously fuel ecnomey out of the patrol was a shite load better , the ride was super comfy , coils vrs leaf and torsion , and if the lux had done the same , I would have had to get the altanator sent to the island and fit , easy to do job but still no car for a few days and more expensive , or the super expensive flat bed to rainbow beach ,
In my mind there is a place for all the technology available and it is nice to have , but when things go wrong it is always a chain reaction as all these things run off each other , one thing faults the whole system dies , and it is never while picking up the milk at the local shop ,
and if you are in the more remote parts of our great country the local fix it blokes idea of technology is a test light , and if ya real lucky he may have a multi meter , come to think of it thats all you really need to get a old tec donk singin along , maybe a half inch ring spanner and a 10 inch shifter flat head and a philips screw driver

Rusty, my vehicle is a 94. My fuel pump control unit is situated in the bottom of d/s kick panel. The timer for running the fuel pump whilst the oil pressure rises is defective on mine, due to moisture ingress (it is only a problem if I've drained the carby. ) If your pump is not running, and the fuses are not blown, it may just be the control unit playing up due to moisture or vibration damage, etc.Quote:

Didn't even know there was a trailer behind it most times. At take off like any vehicle towing you could notice it but once you moving it was great.
I agree that the new vehicle fuel ecnomey is great , all controlled by computer and a multitude of sensors the all require x amount of voltage to work , as soon as the battery is not able to hold or get that charge it all seems to stop , from what I understand the new diesals are just as open to water in the electrics as any of the new petrol motors , and as far as fuel costs if you have to worry about that dont own a big 4wd get a suzuki 1lt we had one as a second car for ten years awsome fun cheep to run easy to fix , did a engine swap gearbox swap and clutch and was back on the road after lunch.

all done without jacks and with your bare hands like the good old days hey gaddy, just lifted that motor out by the intake manifold and put it on the kitchen sink for a clean :)

pretty much ya gotta love a gear box you could put in with one hand and not spill the beer you had in the other , and you right no jacks needed

the control unit is unplugged and the lpg runs.
Next test is plug it back in and and unplug the fuel pump in the tank.
Apears to be a faulty pump.
I'll replace it anyway to be sure later

I shuddered when I read on here a day or two ago of a GU which has an electronic accelerator. What would you do if your alternator died mid Simpson?

I understand new tech being better and more fuel efficient but you can beat the reliability of old tech even if it costs a bit more

Hey Rusty, I see on the early post, that you said there is on power to the petrol pump. If you have the switch on petrol, and the ignition on run, then you should have 12volt from earth on the Green red wire at the top of the fuel tank for a few seconds, ( oil pressure timer working). If that isn't there, then check the fuel control module, (d/s kick panel) there should be 12 volts at the green red wire (for a few seconds) The brown wire has 12 volts for on and start, and the light green wire 12volts for on and accessories. Since you have gas fitted, try the wiring at thepetrol/gas changover switch. Failing all that then the oil pressure switch on the engine block (d/s under the inlet manifold, Green wire) may be the problem. (clutching at straws now)Quote:

First one lasted 8 years, bent the throttle arm and couldnt be bothered, it still runs and starts, but bent throttle arm ,bought another one ,12 months later still no issues

We were tempted to flick the GQ and buy new,but no 4 pot boosted 4x4 dual cab is worth 40 odd grand .......
