VDO do a great gauge Im just about to buy a LHS pillar pod, give the passenger something to do.
same as moving the UHF mike to the LHS, passenger can talk while I do the driving.
Pretty sure you can talk on a UHF around the burbs, unless they have changed the law.
Looking good, great fun kitting out a 4x4 especially if funds allow

I thought it was a charcoal canister for some reason, as it had that oily/diesel feel and smell to it ??? Anyways if it is just a vacuum thing makes it easier to re-arrange them. Might get longer hoses and re-located further away then thought.

Rod, would you happen to have a pic of the wiring on the back of the EGT gauge?
I've just bought the same secondhand but with no fitting instructions and the red twin core VDO thermocouple extension wire was cut off so has no terminals attached. I'm assuming it just uses the standard crimp on 6.4mm flat connectors.

I don't have a pic, but there's 4 standard male terminals on there. Power +Ve and -Ve, EGT probe +Ve and -Ve. Pretty sure they are all clearly marked. Then you also got the light which is self explanatory.

Thanks Rod, I did find that image online. They use the standard red & yellow wires in their diagram but the original thermocouple is too short and the VDO extension uses brown & red.
I was hoping to see how the ends of the extension cable are terminated.
I think I'll just use standard lugs and test it on the bench first.

What I'd like to know is if I can just crimp on a couple of standard flat connectors or if they have to be a particular metal.
I also have no idea how much, if anything, was cut from the original cable.
Info I've been able to find suggests the VDO gauges can't simply use any K type thermocouple like most EGT gauges can.
Going to attempt my first oil and filter change this weekend. Never done it do there !might be a stuffed td42 after this weekend for sale. Wish me luck ???

I work around the corner from the Caltex depot here in Warragul, I buy it in 20L drums for under $100
Castrol RX Super is good for these motors too.
Very hard to find Delo. Nearest place is caltex depot dandenong.

Didn't get around to it today. Nobody had delo on this side of Melbourne. Wasn't gonna drive 2 hours turnaround just for oil all the way to Dandenong.

Don't want to hijack Mudskis thread any more but here is a second video (cold engine start) with the tappers??? chatter you can clearly hear.
As I mentioned in Mudskis thread the mechanic thinks it may be a pressure sensor ??? At the back of the pump. Have no idea how it works or what it does, but he said to try that first. Second video is the one when engine is warm.

Sounds the same as mine mate, my mechanic said I should get the valves adjusted but now I am not sure, may just bite the bullet and get them checked anyway
Sounds notmal to me hodge. I took a recording of mine to send to mudski and I know everything on mine is good at 340k. It wouldnt hurt to get the valve clearances checked either way.
I check mine valves every 20k and hardly ever have to adjust them.
That's what mine sounds like mate. That engine bay is soo clean!
mine is the same too, in fact when its cold it is noisier than any other 4.2 i have heard but when it warms up it is quieter. I have had the valves adjusted and double checked so i just think its normal for my car.

A while back I think Winnie was saying its just a 4.2 thing, and most other 4.2 owners agreed ,
just one of the quirks you have to put up with driving/owning a 4.2TD
So I've got all the bits to do my first oil, filters, fuel and air filters this weekend on the 4.2 . To some of you it's a breeze, to me it's a mission. lol

You'll be right mate, just take you time, there's no rush.
Warm it up first, don't do it cold, it helps the oil run out better.
Don't drop the sump plug into the catch container (remember the oil will be hot)
Make sure your catch container has enough capacity!
Take the oil filler cap off, helps it drain.
Change your filters
Put the sump plug back in - can't stress this enough haha
Fill it back up with oil - I use a 1 liter oil container to measure it out.
Fuel filter.
Take the 2 fuel lines off
Undo the 2 bolts and take the entire filter assembly off the car
Unscrew the filter over a bucket to catch the fuel.
Screw the new filter on
Put the assembly back in the car
Prime it up till it goes hard
Start it up
That's how I do it anyway.

I will add to rockets response. Remove the fuel filter and filter head from bracket (dont forget to unplug water sensor). Then change the oil filters, much easier with the fuel filter out of the way.
You can also flip the filter assembly over and put the bolts back as this will allow you to undo it easier. You can just crack it without losing fluid and making a mess then empty into said container.
They take just over 11 litres.
The spouts that come in those drums make them fairly easy to poor if you have a funnel that fits in the filler. Or just find an old jug in the house :).

... and wash your starter motor down if you don't have a spill tray under the oil filters.. :-)
Small hijack, if I may.. While there are so many GU 4.2 owners in the same thread, please give me your opinion on the vibration level you feel in the driver's seat while idling.
I was probably spoilt by a very smooth TB45 petrol engine that idled beautifully but I'm finding the vibration from my converted TD42 auto quite noticeable. Maybe it's an auto trans thing..
