G'day , I thought I would just start my own thread to do with my GQ as I am always stuffing about with it or breaking it or fixing it....
I have had my Patrol for 18 months now and I love it, Irish got me onto the Patrol way of thinking as I had a Hilux before this but it was a slug and only 2 seats and when hunting it was like trying to fit to gorillas into a tuna can..
I have never loved any car I have owned until now??
Most know I have been stuffing about with front locker of late and as of last weekend I finally fitted up my new air locker thanks to help from George Irish and Mudski.
I did not post straight away about this as I was ironing out some bugs but it is all sorted.
I started stripping out the donor car for parts to make the build a bit easier and quicker but we still ended up going over time by a day....
Irish came early and started fitting my rear LED light strip on the barn door and soon after both George and Mudski turned up and started getting stuck into the locker and hubs.
I had mounted the wiring and compressor days before and all tests looked good.
It turned into a much longer day than planned (usually do) and after George dialed in 2 front diffs (mine and Mudski's) it was 9.30pm and I still had to install it all so after George left I stayed in the garage another hour sorting out a few things and then called it quits.
Next morning I installed the fitting for the airline into the diff and then realised quickly I had no chance to get the bloody thing in by myself... Mudski also had troubles at his house with his install so we worked to get both our problems sorted before going our separate ways and carrying on with our builds.
I ran into a couple little problems that put me back even further but by late in the day I had it all back together.. I went for a quick test drive down to Georges workshop and it felt terrible??
George and I had a test around the back streets and things did not feel right and the compressor was not shutting off??
Things started to settle down over the next day or 2 and I ironed out some of the little problems during the week.
The compressor was a simple fix after some trouble shooting and today I went down to the local sloppy paddock near the bus depot and tested everything properly for the first time and it all worked perfect...
I cant wait to test it all in the real world.. thanks to the boys for coming around and helping as I could not have done this on my own.... cheers guys!!!!!

Update of some work done
Thought I would do an update on this page as a quick reference.
In the last year or so I have had a lot of things done and some big changes made.
First thing was a problem I had with a massive flat spot at 2000 rpm that drove me mad, after many things tried (all the usual stuff ) in the end it was the ECU full of water.
I have had the engine out and had the head welded and crack tested and a brand new cam installed (a present from George and Billy) which has changed my power to higher in the rev range.
Has taken a bit of getting use to but I do like it.
I have fitted a new Ci clutch and changed the gearbox but that has turned into a big mistake as it has had more leaks than a siv ... so next is to fix that and replace all bearing and seals and look into syncro's.
George does most of the work on my car now a days and I get a lot of help from Mudski in the way of parts and also all the good will of those members on here.
There is a lot more and will try and update as it comes to me.
Here are some pics over time as my car has changed

No shit mate..... thats why I want to quickly wreck out the donor car and get this place cleaned up.. I am sick of looking at it all.
Irish will store a bit of the stuff we are keeping and the thought of keeping the donor car to build up a serious toy has played with my mind??
I start the kitchen this weekend so thats another distraction ........?

Gearbox oil change which seemed to be much needed and grease all the bits...
Of all the troubles I have had seem to all now be sorted and except for 1 or 2 niggly things I am happy with how Bruce is travelling.
I am now going to start with the quarter chop and rear bar and in the spring when I have more ready cash I think I am going to do the rear locker.....

Starting to seriously think about a td42 conversion?? I have had some things happen that are weighing on this decision and had a look at Rossco's build but his car was a carb model and I have a efi??
I think I am going to look at a whole car and before people say I should just swap the bits off my car onto a td42 I guarantee it is easier to swap the engine..
Not an easy decision as the mighty dollar comes into play and I have spent a small fortune on this kitchen reno..

I don't reckon you'd need to go that far. Just get an exchange reco head with gas valves (hardened) and it should last for years.
Mine had a reco head put on around 2008 (before I had it) and it was run on dual fuel till I got it (only petrol now). As far as I know, there was no other work done apart from the head and it just clicked over 430,000kms.
But yeah:

I have had to have a re-think at this point as I dont see in the next 2 years I can afford the td conversion?
I think I am going to have to fix my petrol engine and be happy with it for 2-3 years at minimum (could change?) as I have to get a bigger house before my kids get to much older and kill each other.... and I go crazy watching it happen...blah.
Maybe a new head with hardened valves and whats that mod thats done to the head to help atop them doing a head gasket?????
I will weigh everything up over the next couple of weeks and try and make a decision ?
If you can find a td trol with good running gear a rusted out body you could get away with it cheaply. If you did the head i would get a back grind on the valves too so the motor will breath better, i did it on my vl and made the standard valves 3mm bigger.
Turbo your TB Jonathan! You will love it!
It would be fun for a play car but as a daily tow vehicle his fuel consumption might kill him lol

Thats mod but it makes the engine bay cluttered but if you bleed the air out of the motor out correctly you dont need to do it.

Here is a bit of an update... well from the last trip the shocks have shat themselves, it seems they looked all good but must having been sitting around for awhile and all the seals and rubbers have gone to the hard side!!!
On the trip I was getting a lot of banging noise from under the car and stopped a number of times to see if I could work out what it was... so now I have put my old Pedders shocks back in (one bent rear shock) and all the noise has gone.
They will be sent off to ARB in Thomastown to be rebuilt with all new shaft and seals.
As for the engine it held up very well with the chemical treatment for the trip and the gas tune Georges dad did got it running smooth but this was always a band aid fix until I could figure out what to do.
I have tracked down a whole engine for a good price and will do the swap very soon.. it is running 2 head gaskets and was set up for turbo but I have gone through my finances this week and there is no way I can go down this path at the moment.
So very much sooner than later it is going to be another big effort to fit and engine.
I used my locker on the trip for the first time with Winnie sitting next to me doing a hill climb while I screamed like a little girl!!!!!! I frickin love it!!!!!
Oh well more money I should not be spending is on its way out the door!!!

It will be interesting to see how long the chemical lasts. My Old Trol has had chemiweld fix done almost 18months ago, to stop the radiator weeping. My Brother in law ran his Honda civic for three or four years when the head gasket leaked and he gave it a shot of chemical assistance. Since your engine is on its way out, I reckon you should drive it till it drops, and run a pool on how many ks you get out of it.

Today I fitted some new shocks as the others I got were going to cost $900 parts and labour to fix.. so I purchased a full set of Old Man Emu 4 inch shocks and the difference is brilliant.
The car handles so well and it makes me realise how bad it was before and on the last day of the Licola trip the old shocks were rooted, had some scary moments on those tight winding roads.
Also at the moment the car is running perfect and I think its funny that I have this engine almost ready to go in and it is the best its been just about since I have owned the car...!!!
Cant wait to test the shocks on the tracks..

I have 4 inch shocks in nearly a 3inch lift... I want to go a full 3 inch lift and am looking at options for springs that will handle the load a carry..
The drive home from AB's last night on those roads was perfect.
As for the engine I am trying to work all that out as the place is still a mess from everything that has gone on here for the last 4 months and I do not want to then pull an engine out and have no where to put it.
I need to get my hands on an engine stand so I can do some work to the engine before it goes in and I still need to get the gearbox out of the donor car... I am starting to think I will get everything sorted right and not rush it while the chemweld is holding out.
Stay tuned.

I had it in my vl for 3 years before i turboed it and it held up allright even tho i used to race, breakies and 3rd gear power skids in the wet ( only need 5kw in the wet lol ) and not to mention inertia drifting around corners by throwing the T bar from D to 1st to start the drift with a compression lock up ( saves the hand break )

Well today I stopped in at Georges workshop and his brother Billy fitted up my new extended brake lines as mine really were stretched to their limits and did a brake fluid flush and my brakes have never worked better (Thanks Billy).
I have ordered my new heavy duty lower control arms from Patroldocta and should arrive Monday but while we were poking around under my car we noticed that panhard rods are next thing to get and the sooner the better.
Under full flex the whole lot moves over so much its hitting things it should not.... I have been paranoid about the lower control arms after I broke one at Tallarook and thought what would I have done if I broke one on one of the big trips in the middle on nowhere so had to get them before this trip.. nothing beats getting your car up on a hoist and having a good look around.
You spot things you never would at home with jacks and stands.
Also today when I got home I thought I would repair my air lines for my compressors and was going mad chasing an air leak..... turns out it was the head of the pump was loose and air was pumping straight past the head gasket!!!!!!
A few things to do before this trip and all to do with suspension and related gear..
P.s if you have not check your brake lines under flex and am running stock lines I advise you check them....

With a good size engine crane and load adjusting setup I can't see why not. Would be tight but as you unload the front will lift allowing a better drop angle On the gear box..
But you could easily remove radiator to give an extra 60mm as you have to drain anyway and just leave aircon condenser in. Just hang the ac compressor from the spring top hat.

Yeah I have thought about this heaps.. I needed the step as the car is bloody high and it would be to hard getting up the bloody thing.
I just cut the piece out and flipped it around and welded it back in.
Will weld in the mounting brackets this afternoon when I have finished work and start looking at the quarter chop which George will be welding up.
I am also collecting all the bits and bobs I need for the engine swap over.. going to fit a new water pump and new gaskets plus thinking engine mounts while its out and maybe a clutch?

Starting stripping down the new engine yesterday to get ready for the swap, a bit to do as I have decided to get Georges shop to fit both the engine and gearbox for a number of reasons.
It all happens next week and I have a bit to do before then as I have to remove 2 head gaskets and fit a new one plus have a good look at the cylinders for wear.
Going over everything so as to save me grief in the long run.. fitting new water pump rear main and may fit new clutch, at the very least new thrust bearing.
Have been taking pics and will post some up later.
I know I could have done this myself but having the wifes old car here and being flat out this time of year it would be to much to try and fit an engine plus keep up with my work load..
My back is also killing me and have been stuffing around with doctors as they dont seem to hear what I am saying to them so the last thing I need is to wrestle with engines and gearboxes.

Your welds are going hold mate, just spend the time getting that weld surfaces clean before you weld. Before starting a new rod chip and wire brush the end of the previous weld. When you start the new weld push back into the previous weld with thew rod.

So here is an update....... my car has not gone in for an engine swap???
Reasons.... money mostly and just as well with me being so sick I never would have got the other engine ready as it did need some unplanned work.
Got school fees for both kids for next year and some unexpected bills and then to top it off our agent neglected to tell us our tenant was moving out this month so thats 2 mortgages we have to pay... yippee!!!!!
So at this rate I will be swapping the engine only and I will be doing it at home....

When I was first coming up with ideas for the rear bar it was going to be more your Kaymar type bar so I got square stub axles but now as I am using 2 inch tube I need the round one so I can just hole saw into them and drop in the stub axle and weld it in place.. the place I got them from is down in the south east I can not be stuffed swapping them over, there is another mob in this area but not sure if they use the same set up??

Well today I finally got around to replacing my radius arms and fitting drop boxes and what I thought would be a couple of hours turned into many!!!
First thing was one of the bolts for the arms would not come out... it had seized into the sleeve and after much time wasted I found I had some spare bolts from the donor car so I cut the bugger in 2 peices.
My old arms were not in good condition and the castor correction bushes were stuffed.
After that drama everything else came out relatively easy and then I set up all the gear for the install.
I had a set of radius arms I got ages ago from a GU and after an easy install of the drop boxes I started the task of fitting the new arms, this got hard..!!
I had 3 jacks and all to manipulate the diff as it was miles off from where the castor bushes had it lined up, I got one side in ok but the other was a lot tougher.
I found once I put the main jack onto the front shaft where it comes out the diff it twisted the diff into place but it still needed to come forward and 4-5cm so I ran my winch off my garage and back to the diff and used that to pull the diff forward.. couple of little tweeks and it was in!!! yeeeeee!!!
I did find when putting everything else back together that the GU has a different mounting for the sway bar.. so now I need som GU mounts.. bugger!!! so no sway bar connected on the front at the moment.
I thought the springs I bought for the front were way to firm (many of you know) but Benny told me to hold off on my decision until I fitted drop boxes and he was right!!
The ride is so much better and the and I have my steering back as before it under steered heaps??
One of the biggest things was watching my driveline straighten up and is no longer kinked from both front and rear shafts..
I have to thank Benny boy so much for his advice as he helped me make up my mind about this mod and what was to be gained from it... brilliant!!!! thanks Benny!!!!!!

Also whipped up some rear mudflaps but need some more chain to stop them going forward into the wheel.. another job for tomorrow before packing.

The biggest difference you'll notice is the way it soaks up the bigger bumps, the easiestway is to go to Bunnings or a shopping centre with sharp steep speed bumps, before you would have felt the the front bounce over the bump now you will feel the suspension soak it up, it will be noticeable.

Nah Drop Boxes are over rated! Who'd have them. They get caught on everything, look like crap and don't do anything and the cops will pin you over and over again!!!!
I know this cause I read it on Face Book!! And they know Everything there!

Hence why I dont use FB. I saw the Q in the flesh today and I had to comment on how the old girl has changed so much in the last twelve months. For the better of course, BA has definitely changed his rig into a well equipped and looking machine. TBH, I didn't think much of the Q's at the start but his work has plenty changed my thoughts.

Nope I'm saying that things like castor correction on big lift (over 2-3 inch) is entry level crap, with the only benifit being ground clearance
Putting something descent in, will have some sort of benifit across the board.

Really........ bump stops should have been done a long time ago.
If george has a 2 post hoist it will be much easier.
Remove the shocks and take an extended and collapsed measurement of the shock. Remove the springs.
Lower the hoist and drop it onto the bump stops, take a measurement between the shock mounts and compare them to the collapsed length of the shock and make up the difference. Its always good to set the bump stops with about 10mm to spare on the shock as a bit of a safety buffer.

Yeah been meaning to update this but have been a bit busy...
Picked up new endless air system and want to do a write up on the install.
It looks for sure I have to install the engine before brindabella so will try and fit it all up at the same time...
So much to do and so little time. .. I am also plastering the lounge room and I hate it with a passion .
