George keeps telling me to run higher octane but I am not sure its worth it with these engines?
.
It's worth it mate, they said so on 5th Gear lol
Seriously though, I get better economy and a slight just barely noticeable improvement in power using 98ron than 95 and 91. Yes you spend more in fuel but you get a bit further on it, so kind of equals out.
In saying that I still use 20ltr/100, 400km per 80ltr. Yes I know, my poor old clunker needs some love and attention ;)

i done a trial on the work car (mitsu l300 van POS) 91 vs 95 and dollar per km the 95 was definatly better than 91. Can't remember by how much but it would be noticeable with the amount of kms you do also.

the fuel economy is definitaly better running the 98 octane. also the price different IMO is almost negligeable. do the math and youll see its only about 5-10$ dearer for the premium fuel per fill... thats really not worth squabbling over IMO

I just filled up and put in the 98 octane from Shell..
Now I got 394km and put in 92lt's from Shell 95 octane... see what we get from the next tank?
23.3503 per 100km..

G'day BlodyAussie,
Mate, I am concerned when you suffer from depression when the GQ in not working properly.
However, I know that you are a true patriotic Aussie and if you want me to, I can make a call to have your GQ picked up and shipped out to an Army anti-armour range so that the lads can practice firing the latest anti-armour weapons at it. I am even prepared to video and take some serious action photo's for you. What do you think. lol
PS, my wife and I have a 10 year old ford laser that has missed a beat that you can have. lol

Last couple of days my clutch pedal has felt very firm when accelerating but soft while backing off and changing down... now I know these are vacuum assisted and George said that is normal for a car that has a cam but it is steadily getting worse.... George is in the mountains today collecting firewood so I cant hassle him...he he.
It feels like it is resisting me but as I back off it feels so easy to push the pedal..??
Its had a new slave put in nearly 2 years ago and the fluid level seems fine....

That is going to be normal because with a cammed motor you will have a lower manifold vacuum.
Install a vacuum gauge in your patrol, and you can monitor your engine.

23.3503 per 100km..
Ok I filled up and here are the figures with 98 octane...
I did 367km and needed to put 88lt's in which works out to 23.9782...?
Now I filled up again with 98 octane but only cause the price was at its low point.
Today I rebuilt a clutch booster which went very well thanks to advice from George and the thread on this forum.
I also fitted my old injectors as I have had trouble with the suppliers.. now I set up a rig to run carb cleaner through a syringe and connected to a battery with a momentary switch to flush and clean them.
Had an issue with one injector that was not pulsing but after a quick call to George I was told to give it a tap to get it going... I did the old screw driver held against the injector and could here the good ones ticking but number 4 was not.
Personally I am over it and Mags has told me to pull the pin as she is sick of the fuel bills... I dont blame her as she has been so patient.
See what the next tank of fuel brings....

This is such a tough one and we don't have to tell you that coz you're already in the middle of it all.
Money sure can be a PITA. In no time at all it can be one of the easiest things that heads us off in the direction where we feel like writing in the depression thread. That can usually be accelerated in making poor choices and then dealing with the impact it has on our partners and family.
Try to make a rational choice that you know you'll be happy with a week or two later. The challenge I always have is the balance in it all. The 4by is the thing I find most tempting to spend on, which easily causes me issues. Having said that, it's also one of the great things that I enjoy and I know that it helps keep me positive and away from depression issues (and I'm pretty lucky in that my wife understands that).
If you can, take support from here, but don't be pressured by all the enthusiasm. Amongst all the stirring I think everyone understands whatever you choose to do, because almost everyone faces the same issue to a greater or lesser extent.
Maybe there is some compromise where you can get out of this one and wait for the right opportunity? I'm happy to admit that I compromised and skipped on a Patrol for now, purely because of these same pressures. For now, that seems to have worked well for me, but will I have another Patrol one day - sure hope so! (Just got to save for a real one = straight to a GU and not compromise on a GQ) :D
All the best with your choices!

Truth be told, I'm not sure whether you'll improve those consumption figures that much. Mine gets 17-20L/100km on the highway cruise and would probably be doing between 20-25L/100km around town. Given you often tow a trailer in town I reckon those consumption figures are not far off the mark. You'd get some improvement by swapping to smaller, road biased tyres but how keen are you to do that.
On the subject of a TD42 conversion, remember that many get 14L/100km from their TD42.....not really HUGELY better than where you are at now. Factor in a higher diesel price and even less so......food for thought given you will be doing mainly city km and diesels are not much more efficient than a lot of petrol vehicles around town (they are best suited to hwy work).
What difference does the larger 33" tyre play in fuel consumption figures?

Well I have decided well and truly and will start the hunt soon....
I am going to look for a TD42 with a rusted body or roll over... just missed out on one this week as I am not cashed up yet but with 260,000km it was a good deal.
Spoke with the mechanic at JPC this morning and it sealed the deal for me.
He said dont spend another cent on the EFI and put everything into doing the conversion... I told him of my mileage and he said that sounds about right and with towing a trailer you are always going to be chewing through petrol..
As with the TD it makes little difference if you are towing.
So today after I paint the laundry walls I will go out and do a touch more work to the gardening trailer to get it ready for sale... plus the ride on lawn mower this will go a long way towards funding my conversion.
So Bruce stays but with a different lump !!!!!!

As much as I'm a fan of a td what your gonna spend on converting yours you could possibly buy a nice td GQ wagon and just put all your gear on it then sell your wagon to make some of the purchase price back. I really think this would be the most economical way to go.
I will reiterate something I have said to you before these are just suggestions at the end of the day it's your decision and we will still give you advice either way.
Hey Jonathan, good luck with it mate, sign me up for any working bee and I'd be happy to make some time for you mate.
The above post from Matt is, in my opinion, the best advice you have recieved in this thread so far! Unless you can find a rolled over or written off TD wagon and get the whole car I think your chasing bad money with good money..
Loose the sentimental, buy a TD wagon and take your good bits off your car and fit to the new wagon then sell you complete car. Or, strip your car of the bit you really really really need and seep the package for a good coin to fund the new TDGQ wagon. I just can't understand why you'd retain the current vehicle.
If you move it on you can close the chapter and move on. Margarette will also not look at the different car in the drive with the resentment she had for the current one. If you throw another $5k at this car it is still the car in the drive that cost you and she sooo much money.
Sell it and find a TDGQ rolling and ready for some love. Give it a new name and start living again mate.
Best wishes and good luck mate.

Dont think you realise how much crap I have on this car and how long it would take to swap everything over.....????
It would be far quicker and easier to swap and engine than all the other crap???
All my stuff is new and anything I buy will no way have had just about everything replaced..
My main goal is to find a rusted or rollover and only just missed out on a very good one as I stated earlier so they are out there.

Yeah I really do appreciate what may be new and worth coin. If though you find a "Rusted Out" TD wagon are you buying a good motor ou of a neglected POS?? Or risking a motor that has probably also been neglected? Almost certainly the latter.
A written off would be a better option IMO. I have no idea but do you need the TD Loom for the conversion? Certainly all the bolt ons will be needed on the engine.
You should get a pen and list what you actually want to keep on this car. List t, write it down. Value it. If you sell the car how much of that list can you take off first and not affect the sale price? -(bonus stuff)
If you sell your very sweet TB GQ ready to go you will get good coin for it. You are then looking for a very nice TD42 Wagon that will likely have a nice lift, a locker or 2, bar, winch. Happy days! Drive on!
I brought back my written off GQ way back when I drowned it because I thought the stuff fitted to it was worth keeping. Silly! Should have taken the money and bought again.
Just my thoughts mate, happy to be the guy steering you another way. ;)

I have a front diff centre in a 4.1:1 you'd be welcome to so you can take your front locker centre out mate.

Actually Darren, he'll be needing those 4.11's after the TD conversion coz the TB's Run 3.9's so his locker need to be removed and the crown wheel and pinion needs to be swapped to suit the TD. Thats front and rear i might add.....

Will the locker be able to be used in the new diff centre or is it then no use to him?

No it will bolt straight in. Has he still got the bits out of his front diff?
My GUiV has 3.9s with the TD42Ti and its not too bad, he could get away with it until he finds some new centres. When he finds some I would be chasing at least some 4.3s rather than the 4.1s. If he wants to run 35s often then 4.6s for the win. I'd like to swap out my 3.9s for some 4.3s on the GUIv
Alitis007
10th July 2014, 05:27 PM
Actually my mistake, i'm thinking his run 3.9 like mine but mines an auto he's already running 4.11's lol and your right he'd be better running 4.3 or 4.6's for better acceleration

I love ya Daz but this is how it is going to be and I need you all to stay the course.
I will be looking to do the conversion and my reasons are as stated.
I got slack today doing stuff with the kids so have not managed to get the ride on on the market..
So as I am sticking with my plan of action I ask again is it worth putting my engine on the market now?
Does anyone have good connections with engine supply.
I want to turn this year around and end on a high as the first 6 months (since Brindabella) has been dogs balls.

What are your thoughts on taking a little more time and whatever TD you get atleast give a minor freshen up. This means you can give it an inspection the throw some new rings and bearings at it as well.

Comes down to the almighty dollar.. I am only working a third of what I use to and am not doing any landscaping jobs so the income is greatly reduced..
I promised margherita that I would only use money from the sales of my gardening equipment.

Jonathan like winnie said if you put the motor on the market now and sell it your car will be sitting around till you find a donor/motor so are you going to re register the bluebird or wait till start the conversion before you immobilize your trol??

This is my thought. At the minimum, pull the head off and give it a quick hone and new rings. Do it once and do it right. I'm glad to help out at cost prices for any OEM bits you need too. Just need time to order them and wait though mate.

This is exciting. My local mechanic here bought a rolled diesel gq for a thousand dollars. Chucked the engine and box into his GU and reckons it was the best thing he could have done to the thing. There's a rolled gq silver top here at the wreckers at the moment with about 140k on it. Hire a trailer and head north I say....
